Strathdon Aberdeenshire
« on: Monday 28 March 11 12:02 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could give me any info about Strathdon, my Grandmother was a domestic servant and on my mothers birth cert her address is listed as Scotsbank Strathdon. Does anyone know if there were any large houses in that area this was in 1941. Anything would be great thanks. Sorcha

Scot(t)sbank is shown on an OS map from 1903 not far from Poldullie Bridge to the south west of Strathdon. It was still there in 1975 on the A944, west side of the road.

I used to live very close to Scotsbank, from about 1945 to 1962.  Scotsbank belonged to the Tornashean estate which had a large shooting lodge and extensive properties including farms, moorlands for shooting and fishing rights and its own electricity generator.  Scotsbank was the residence at that time of the gamekeeper of the estate.  My grandfather was the gardener and my grandmother was the housekeeper of the lodge for many years (it was only mostly only occupied during the fishing and  shooting seasons).  I was well acquainted with the keeper and sometimes worked with him either burning heather or beating for grouse.  The shooting lodge no longer exists since it was demolished many years (1970's) if I remember correctly.
