Clarity on Surname please - Carlin?
« on: Sunday 27 March 11 23:09 BST (UK) »
The attached is a census entry (Dublin 1911) and i can not identify it - the census records it as Carliey .. but there is no other matching surname!
This is her married name and attempts to identify the marriage are failing.

I'd welcome your suggestions

Thanks

It definitely says Carliey. If that's her married name, is her husband's and any children's surname the same in the entry? If an ennumerator wrote it, perhaps it's a mishearing. If you can't find a marriage, try for the birth of a child, if there is one.

Graham.

I can't find the  Carliey name on any site. However there are some named Carlley. Is it possible that the letter after the 'l' is another 'l' with a messy blob for the top loop and a faded downward stroke?
The top blob looks too big to be the dot of an í' to me.

Hi

Carlin was originally Irish and the first record was in County Limerick.  There was also a Bishop Carlin in County Meath in 1799.

Please do a free name search on our site www.hallofnames.org.uk

Best of luck!

All,
Thanks for the input and suggestions. to address some of the suggestions - yes, she is married, but living / staying with her mother & step father - (states that she is married one year on census) so the spouse name is not there.  I have looked at 1909/1910 weddings in her maiden name of McCormack to see if i can identify the spouse - I'm still working those names.

I have looked at the handwriting of the hoseholder (Robert Woodward) for the 1901 census to see if i could identify any handwriting traits but nothing too obvious.... getting very CSI here!

Thanks

dont know if it helps, but here's a good possible match for Sarah Jane with her first husband and two children on the 1901 census:

  McCormack household, Chancery Lane

and possible birth of son  Albert in 1897 (www.irishgenealogy.ie)
