Challinor brothers in Dover

The Kent board is new territory for me, I usually stay in Montgomeryshire, but after spending the day with my Great Aunt I have found out that two of her Uncles ended up living in Dover.

Richard and Joseph Challinor, the sons of Charles & Florence Challinor, were born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire:-


Richard born 1874 married Louise Smith in 1897, Dudley
Children: George Alexander Challinor, Stanley Challinor both born in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire.
In the 1911 census I have the family in Whiteheath, Rowley Regis.

Joseph Challinor born 1879 married Esther Daniels in 1899, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire
Children: George Granville Challinor (died in infancy), Richard Kendrick Challinor, Beryl Challinor all born in Ystrad, Glamorganshire.
In the 1911 census I have the family in Fron Pentre, Glamorgan.

I have found deaths in Dover on FreeBMD for:

Beryl Challinor Sep Q 1931
Esther Challinor Mar Q 1939
Richard K Challinor Dec Q 1942
Louisa Challinor Mar Q 1953


I have also found a marriage, and births of children with correct mother's maiden name but they may be still alive so won't post details on here.

I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction for finding burial/grave information, or where I would need to look to find out any further information about the Challinor's time in Dover.

Finally, if anyone recognises any of these names I would love to hear from you.  It would make my Great Aunt's day if I could give her some details.

If the burials were actually within Dover then Dover District Council should have a record of them in one of their cemeteries http://www.dover.gov.uk/burials__cemeteries.aspx

Am guessing that they quite likely came down to work in the Kent coal fields http://doverdc.co.uk/kentcoal/home.asp

There is a death of Joseph Challinor in 1961 in Canterbury Joseph was 81  Qtr 2 5b 252.  At the time of his death the hospiatl at Canterbury was the main hospital for the area.  Dover Council  Cemetry's team can be contacted on 01304 872458 

Richard Challinor died in Dover in 1956 aged 83 qtr3  Vol 5b page 420
If you can find out the deatils of the graves, I will see if there are headstones and take photos if you wish.

Phoned Dover Council, the lady who knows where all the graves are, is on holiday until 19 Sept.  Until she returns they cannot tell me if the Challinors are buried in Dover!

I am more than happy to swap info   I have done many years research on the Challinor's, as far back as Cheshire, Denbighshire and originating in Chester.  My line is the only one that ventured to Montgomeryshire.

I'm so grateful for your help and info.  Thank you for taking the trouble to phone Dover Council for me, much appreciated and also the offer of headstone photos.

Regretably no!  The lady (very helpful - credit to the council) could find no record of a burial for Joseph or Richard.  However the was a George, and she is going to get the details for me tomorrow.  She suggest that they may have been cremated at Barham - the nearest crematorium to Dover.  Alternatively they were returned to a family grave in Wales?
I will contact the Cremitorium for any info they have.

Thank you for your effort - I will follow up on the possibility of a grave in Wales. 

Their brother, Charles Pryce Challinor, is buried with his wife Florence in Newtown Cemetery, Powys.  There are other siblings to investigate aswell.
