Service Records of UK POWs in German or Italian hands
« on: Saturday 26 March 11 09:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am currently writing an article on UK POWs in German or Italian hands during the Second World War. I am keen to get in touch with someone who has managed to obtain service records from the MOD of a former POW. I would like to examine the service records of former POW.

Looking forward to a reply to this post

Many thanks

Asher

Asher perhaps the best place to look failing personal interviews with ex POW would be at Red Cross reports for camps.
There may be enough for you in Camp Histories.
All at Kew of course.

Many thanks for your reply. The reason for the post is that I have never examined the service records of someone who has been taken prisoner by the Italians or the Germans and it would be useful for the article I am writing.

The service records are still held by the MOD and am most interested what the service records 'recorded'. If you know of anyone who has service records of a POW, it would be good to discover what sort of information is contained in them.

I am also on the lookout for unpublished letters or diaries, which I could use extracts.

Best

Asher

I have seen copies of Service Records of Ex POW and they give little detail.

The best place to look I would have thought would have been at Kew in the WO 344 Class; Liberated POW Questionaires. Some are very brief but usually give date of capture and dates in various camps. Others give more; these have that detail extracted into WO 208/5437 - 5450.

I must have quite a few on my hard drive copied as past favours.

I have had the opportunity of reading service records of many ex POWs' from German, Italian and Japanese camps and can confirm there is minimal information. Usually it just comprises of acknowledgement of their incarceration and the name/s of the camps.
