My youngest grandparent was born in 1922 so I won't see her on a census until the 1951 when she was married with 3 children, one of whom is my father!

I may be around to see it though as my grandfathers lived to 85 on my maternal side and 93 on my paternal, and my grandmothers are 92 and 88 respectively :D

Thanks CaroleW

That's 101 years, someone moved the goalposts!

Never mind only a year to wait to solve another mystery :)

And there I was thinking, next month I'd be able to solve a problem.  Oh well, as you say only another year to wait.

The '100 year rule' didn't come in until 1921.  The release date for the 1911 census was entirely at the discretion of the government.

Are you saying the government could have decided never to release the 1911 census?  And having decided it could be released early who decided the last column should be hidden until 2012 and not 2011?

That'll be one for Guy to answer.  ;)

The 1901 census came out on 2nd January 2002.
That was a clear 100 years from the end of 1901,to the first working day of 2002.

So we never expected the 1911 to come out till 2012.
It was all down to Guy Etchells arguing the case for us genealogists, but they siad they would only release it on the priviso that the last column remained hidden till the end of the 100th year............ie Jan 2012.

Thank you for the explanation Carol.  In my simple way, I just assumed if the census was taken on 2 April 1911, then the last column would be released on 2 April 2011.  To me that is 100 years.   But who can ever understand how bureaucrats work.

My birthday is 5 January, and my age increases by 1 year every birthday.  I don't have to wait until the end of each year - although that would be good, because it would mean that I was permanently 1 year younger than I am. ::)

That's what I thought too Lizzie.

However, it brings back memories of the new millenium and some people thought it should be celebrated Dec 31st 1999/Jan 1st 2000
and others Dec 31st 2000/Jan1st 2001.

If you're born 1st June 1921 you celebrate your 100th birthday on 21st June 2021
and so I had hoped that the last column would be revealed in April 2011.

As I said before "never mind" and now I say " everything comes to he who waits" :)
Best wishes HL
