Tomlinson/Graham Whitehaven
« on: Friday 25 March 11 19:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I currently have some information on family members but I am one generation short of finding them on the 1911 census (theyre on it but not sure which ones)

My ancestor is James G Tomlinson born 1918 in Whitehaven (source BMD)

His parents are John Tomlinson and Annie Graham, who married in 1911, but crucially, after the census date so they appear seperate i think. Annie died in 1921 and John then remarried Emily Hodgson later that year.

Annie's age at death was given at 30 which would mean she was born 1891ish

The problem I am having is that the BMD records do not state the subdistrict/town and only give 'Whitehaven' so I am unable to confirm that i have found them on the census

My gut feel is that the John Tomlinson born 1892 and living at Main Street Fisher's Back Row, Parton in 1901 is probably the one im looking for, as I can find an Annie Graham (1891) also living in Parton at Drift Mouth, Main Street.

Can anyone confirm that information please. There seems to be a fair few Tomlinson's and Graham's living in Whitehaven with the same names and similar birth years.

Thanks

Gaz

Hi Gaz

Have you got their marriage certificate? This would give both of their father's names so that you can find them on the 1911 and 1901 censuses

Unfortunately not. Though if all else fails I will have to order it  ;)

I managed to trace the family back to Whitehaven, as after marrying Emily Hodgson, they moved to Rotherham, Yorkshire and had more children, some of which are known to us.

I suppose I am hoping that someone has access to parish records, or something that will have more than just 'Whitehaven' as the place of birth.

Thanks

Gaz

The familes you mention had both moved by 1911 - the TOMLINSONs into Whitehaven and the GRAHAMs the short distance to Bransty.

If you go to the following,  Parton 1910 Land Tax,, there is a John Tomlinson at 110 main Street.
There are also two Graham families, 107 Main Street  and
34 Bank Yard Road (which was next to Drift Yard)

Hi Gaz2195.

I think my Great Grandma, Annie Taylor/Tomlinson was James's older sister. Her Mom was Annie Graham and Dad John  Tomlinson from Whitehaven. John remarried Emily and had I think daughters Peggy and Beryl. Annie Tomlinson married Arthur Taylor and moved to Sheffield. I haven't got any accurate dates yet a have only just started researching. Do you know anything more about teh Graham side? Where from Scotland were they from?

Cheers
Danielle

James and Annie also had a sister called Joan. I'm trying to find out more about the Grahams, do you know anything? I only know that they were from Scotland.

Danielle, I need to confirm first that the two families I have detailed above in Parton are the correct individuals before I try to trace back further (i have been caught out before when assuming information is correct ;-)). Once I have confirmed that, I should be able to find more information, as the census' will detail the decades before.

I will dig out the detail on the family when I get home later, but from memory there were.

To Annie Graham (all whitehaven)
Henry
John G
Annie
James G

To Emily Hodgson
Ronald (whitehaven)
Joan - wasnt sure she was linked until your post (doncaster)
Beryl & Betty - twins (rotherham)
Derrick - think he died young (rotherham)

James G Tomlinson's descendants live in or around Rotherham present day. I am told that one of the twins has done some family research already so I may be able to confirm all of the above if I can get in contact.

Regards
Gaz
