Hi
Mabel Ashwin was my great grandmother also.  I have researched the Ashwin family for many years and have a lot of info, including the same letter from Martin to his son Manley, about the family back in England.  Some of it doesnt quite fit, but I imagine Martins memory may have failed him slightly by then. I also have a letter from the Wheeler side, some things do tie in.
Does anyone happen to have a photo of Martin??
Would love to contact anyone else descended from this very large family!
Regards
Ro

Hello timandro,
Welcome to the Rootschat - I have found it an amazing site! I have gained so much information from the many generous people out there who so willingly give of their knowledge - and I hope to be able to return this in part as I am able.

I am a descendant of Esther Alexandra Cunningham Ashwin - daughter also of Martin Richard and Emma Priscilla. She was my Great Grandmother. I too would love to have a photo of Martin Richard - this I do not have but I do have a photo of Emma Priscilla. If you wish I could send you a copy. After three posts I would be able to talk to you through Personal Messages attached to this site.

I also have a copy of the letter from Martin Richard to his son Manley - and likewise I agree that a lot doesn't tally. I have been researching the Ashwins for some little time now but I find it somewhat confusing trying to fit the correct Ashwins families together - and trying to sort the Bretfortin Ashwins from the Bidford on Avon Ashwins etc.

I see also that you have a letter from the Wheeler side of the family that explains a little more. I would be most interested in learning more about the Wheelers and about the Wheeler letter if you so wish.

Regards
whiteKat

Hi whiteKat

I also have a pic of Emma, it is probably the same as you have, as I think it circulated around the family, it shows a lovely determined looking lady.

I have a heap of info collected over the years, and lots of interesting little bits and pieces about all the Ashwins, which I am happy to share with another 'cousin'

Regards
Ro

Hi again,

I am also in contact with a lovely Wheeler cousin (in NZ) who has shared a lot of her side of the family with me, including the letter which sets out all the family names, dates, etc, and links to the Ashwins.

So far I also havent been able to connect the Bretforton Ashwins to the Bidford family, but not from lack of trying!

Hello Ro,
That would be wonderful of you! I will send you my email address through Personal Messages. I would be delighted to receive any information on the Wheelers - I just find it fascinating putting the story together. Thank you so much for your kind offer.

I have been thinking - there must be very many of us now down the line - descendants of the Ashwins and Wheelers related to each other in some way or another.

Kind regards
Kate

Hi, I am an Ashwin descendant and really keen to know more about them.  My great grandfather was Manley John Ashwin, son of Emma Priscilla and Martin Richard.  Eighteen children is hard to imagine.  I am going to go to Little Akaloa at the end of March and would like to know any details anyone has on their life there before they shifted to Hautapu.  I am also going to see if there are any gravestones for the two (I think) children who died there.  There may be some records in the local church about baptisms too.  Did they leave because their house burned down?  There is an article in the Akaroa newspaper Jan 6th 1882 mentioning a Mr Ashwin and a fire having destroyed his house.

I am keen to get a photo of Emma and Richard, is there any chance you can post one online or somehow get it to me.

Hi. my great, great grandfather was James Ashwin (1798-1867) variously described as a sharebroker, surveyor, estate agent, coal merchant of Birmingham. His elder brother was Edward (b1788) a maltster also from Birmingham. Their parents were Edward (1755-1817) baker and maltster in Birmingham and Ann Roberts. Edward senior was from Honeybourne and the son of Manley Ashwin.

I thought that Edward Junior was married to Elizabeth Wheeler (1814 South Littleton, Worcs.). As Elizabeth Ashwin she appears as a widow in the 1851 census running a school in Hagley Road, Birmingham (not far from my childhood home). However it seems that I may be wrong here. Edward Ashwins died in 1827 in Birmingham and 1832 in Bidford on Avon, since Elizabeth's son Martin was born in 1832 the latter seems the most likely but on the other hand Bidford maybe makes him less likely to be the Edward married to Elizabeth Wheeler.

Now that I have thoroughly confused everyone perhaps there is someone who knows the truth of it?
