William James Babington Macaulay
« on: Friday 25 March 11 03:48 GMT (UK) »
Looking for more information on the family of William James Babington Macaulay
who served as the Irish Ambassador to the Vatican.  Here is what I have been able
to find to date:

1.  Capt. Patrick Macaulay of Waterside, Co. Antrim, married Elizabeth Murphy.

2.  William James Babington Macaulay (1892-1964) m. 1937 in the U.S.
to Duchess Geneviev Brady, a very wealthy widowed heiress.

2.  Mary Macaulay m. Mr. Hand

In the 1901 census this is the nearest match that I was able to find:

69 Chatham St., Clifton Ward

Eliz(z)a  McAuley, 48, Reeler of flax, widow

James McAuley, 19, dock labourer

Eliza, 17, reeler of flax

Joseph McAuley, 13, flax mill worker

Mary McAuley, 11, flax mill worker

William J. McAuley, 9, student--Can this be the same William?

Here's the family you found in 1901 census in case anyone else wants to look at the record-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Clifton_Ward/Chatham_Street/983141

Genevieve (Garvan) Brady Macaulay died in 1938 so her marriage to William didn't last too long. Here's some interesting bits about her and about her 1st husband:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Frederic_Brady
http://jesuitjoe.blogspot.com/2007/01/inisfada.html

Not sure if the census entry you've posted is correct one. I tried searching both 1901 and 1911 census for Patrick but couldn't find any likely matches - have a feeling the surname has been either spelt or transcribed differently than Macaulay.

You didn't mention where William's marriage to Genevieve took place (possibly New York?) but most U.S. states (including, I think, New York) list names of both parents on marriage certificates.

Searched civil registration index and found a possible birth Oct./Dec.1892 Belfast registration district for William Macaulay (it's possible the middle names James and Babington were added later- perhaps Babington after famous Thomas Babington Macaulay).
Also searched for Patrick- not many Patrick Macaulays born in Co.Antrim- only one is Jan./Mar.1885 also in Belfast district (just a possibility at the moment).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks, Aghadowey.  I have to go back and look at some stray notes I have .  I believe that I found a Patrick who might be his father, but who was living in a different county.

As for Genevieve' husband, he came from quite a wealthy family that
had its hands in many business enterprises.  I am not related to this
family.  Just curious.

Again, many thanks for your help--Paul

when you went in to the home page did you type William Macaulay in the search box on the right of the screen.
it does not tell you much I think they want people to buy the book or your Library.
