Mygreat-grandmother Mary Pursley
« on: Friday 25 March 11 03:01 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on my g-grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Pursley. She was born July 18, 1841, maybe in South Carolina. Married Thomas Jefferson Roland in White County, Ga. December 15, 1865. Died in Chambers County Alabama or North Georgia. Died December 14, 1916. I am looking for informat on her earlier years.

Welcome to rootschat vlrowland.

I'm afraid I can't help with your request, but I just wanted to let you know that you have posted this question in the wrong place (on The Lighter Side where mainly non Family History Topics are discussed).

But don't worry - I will ask one of the moderators to move this to the USA board, where more people who may be able to help you, will see it.

Good luck with the search.

Hello Vlrowland,

Welcome to Rootschat

Literally dozens of family tree entries on Mary Elizabeth Pursley but all have very little source information.

The only census I can see prior to the marriage is an 1860 one showing a Mary E Pursley born in Georgia and living in Southern Division, Randolph, Alabama. The image is very sketchy and faint.

Willis Pursley 54 Born South Carolina. Farmer. Value of real estate $1200. Value of personal estate $1000.
Mary Pursley 43 Born South Carolina
Mary E Pursley 21 Housemaid. Born Georgia.
Andrews D Pursley 18 Housemaid. Born Alabama.
Susannah V Pursley 15 Housemaid. Born Alabama
All the other children also born Alabama.
Thomas J Pursley 14 Nancy J Pursley 13 Sarah M Pursley 9
William J Pursley 7 Lucinda C Pursley 6 Willis J Pursley 3
Marion E Pursley 1 Julia A F Pursley 6 months.

Regards
Sandra

Not sure they are her family because of grandmother and grandfather's children's names.

W. H. (could have been Willis, but also could have been William-gg-grandfather Roland could have been William) b. 19 Jan. 1867. They say that normally the first son is named after the father's father. (d, 16 Mar. 1867)

James Jefferson (Jim) b. 17 Feb. 1868 d. 24 Oct. 1951

Susan Rosetta E. (called Susan, but my gg-grandmother on my father's side was Susan) b. 18 Apr. 1869 d. unknown

John Wesley b. 11 Feb. 1872 d. 23 Jul. 1938

George Washington b. 20 Feb. 1873 d. unknown

R. (probably Robert) Wiley b. 30 Jan. 1874 d. 15 Sept. 1881

Mary E. (Marietta) b. 20 Jun. 1876 d. 15 Jan. 1916

Tursie A. b. 13 Jan. 1878 d. 16 May 1936

Tillman b. 16 Aug. 1880 d. 15 Apr. 1888

Alex Z. b. 19 Sept. 1882 d. unknown

Thomas Emory (Tom) b. 20 Oct. 1884 d. 2 Mar. 1960

Indina b. 22 Jun. 1886 d. 22 Dec. 1886

D. Cora b. 15 Jul. 1888 d. unknown

I have most of the places of births and deaths on the children. Most or all, of the children were born in Hall County, Ga. My grandparents also lived in Walton County about 1900. Then they moved to Chambers County, Alabama and were supposed to have owned property there. My g-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Pursley (called
Betsy) had been living in Chambers Co. when she died in 1916. I also heard that she moved to north Georgia and died there. So, I am confused on that issue. She is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett, Alabama.
