Geoff

I have an interest in HARLEYs of Swineshead.  Unfortunately, I have very little info at present - only that a Thomas HARLEY (sometimes known as GILBEY) had freehold property in Swineshead in the 1840s.  I have no idea when/where he was born but probably some time in the 1790s to early 1800s and no idea what this property was.

Any connection?

Hi Casalguidi,

There could be a connection.
My Thomas was born 1769 and baptized at Swineshead 1777. He died 1846 at Swineshead.
His wife Susannah died 1831 at Swineshead.
He had a brother Robert baptized on the same day & a sister Ann bapt in 1783

His daughter, Susannah stated on her immigration record that she was a farm servant[but that's another story. Take way too long to go into here]

It's noted that hey married in 1795 at Kensworth in Hertfordshire but I haven't purchased the documentation for that as yet.

They had 5 children that I know of:
James 1798, Susannah 1800 {my Line}, John 1802, Elizabeth 1804 & Mary b1806-d1807

Any help?

cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff

This is what I have from the 1841 census .....................

Thomas Gilby  age 40  Stable Keeper born in county No

Thomas was a livery stable keeper of The Livery Stables, York Road, Lambeth, Surrey.  He dies (prior to 1851) as Thomas HARLEY.  In his will he calls himself Thomas HARLEY also known as Thomas GILBY.  He refers to his freehold property at Swineshead nr. Boston Lincs..

My direct ancestor is a William GILBY of Walworth/Newington, Surrey who dies in the 1830s.  In his will he refers to his brother ................... Thomas HARLEY commonly known as Thomas GILBY of the York Livery Stables, Lambeth.

Thus, my reasoning is that if Thomas HARLEY held property in Swineshead then he probably has some connection with the HARLEYs of Swineshead ???

Not much is it?  I'm hoping that the Swineshead connection may lead me to the orgins of William & Thomas at some stage.

   Hi Geoff...

I know this a old request but I have just done a search on Kensworth and have the marriage in 1795....did you ever get details?

If not here goes....Thomas Harley to Susannah Ellingham
                               20 March 1795.

There are two other Thomas Harley marriages all close together...

Thomas Harley to Sarah Hudson 29 March 1794
Thomas Harley to Sarah Wilson 27 Oct 1803.

             May help

Hi Tazzie,

I do have the marriage, but mine is the 17th March 1795.

Could you tell me where  you found the 20th March 1795 record please?.
I'll have to recheck this to get it right.

Cheers
Geoff

Unfortunately, much too late for me as my connection is c1800.  Hopefully somebody else may have something more recent.  Are you ok with tracing Florried backwards or do you need some help?
