Child Support Payments
« on: Wednesday 23 March 11 12:33 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to determine the identity of my wife's maternal grandfather. My wife's mother was born in 1917 - father 'not known'. However, there is strong family evidence that he sent support payments to the 'court buildings' in Rotherham. Might somebody be able to tell me where any (hopefully) existing records of such payments are held and any relevant contact details.

Hello,

There should be a record of an, 'affiliation hearing' which would name your wife's grandfather. Unfortunately it may not give sufficient detail to enable you to trace her family history. The name may be the only information given about him!

I would try contacting Rotheram Magistrates Court at:

Rotherham Law Courts
The Statutes
Off Main Street
Rotherham South Yorkshire
England
S60 1YW

to see if they can tell you where documents would be kept  from  a case held in 1917.

I do hope you have success!

Hello Steffi

Thank you very much for your advice. As suggested I have contacted the Rotherham Law Courts only to be informed that they do not hold 'family' records for cases before about 1980. Anything before that will have been "shredded". What a waste !!

As it is I have just received some information, based on family hearsay, which has proved to be more than coincidence and leaves me acceptably satisfied.

Once again thanks for your help.

Hello,

A terrible waste! Before you give up on this line of enquiry, it might be worth you checking with local archives just in case they have the documents there!

Glad you have some family knowledge to supply missing information,

Best wishes,

steffi
