St Peters, Poole Parish registers - Beasley
« on: Wednesday 23 March 11 06:14 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I was wondering if someone could look up the St Peters Parish Baptism registers for a James Beasley born in 1882 or 1883?

He is my great grandfather on my mother's side and does not seem to have been born anywhere!! He is well documented from 1907 - his marriage. His marriage certificate states that his father's name was Charles, but prior to that he doesn't seem to exist.

There is a James Beasley appearing as a Grandson in the 1901 census in Devon, but haven't had any luck with that one either.

James states his birthplace as St Peters on his army record, so thought I'd try that route. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kerri

The Parish Registers for St Peters went to Dorchester some years ago when my father-in-law was churchwarden. They only retain the current ones, though that includes the original registers for St Mary's Brownsea as they are still in use due to so few entries. I looked at the Dorset OPC site, but that only goes to 1877. The microfilmed registers are available in Poole Museum or the Dorset County Archive in Dorchester if you can find someone to do a look-up. I'm tied up this week, but will look to see if you've had any replies when I've next got some free time.

Hi Kerri

No joy, I'm afraid. There is no Beasley (or anything similar) in the Baptism Register for St Peter's, Parkstone between 1881 and 1885. Of course, That doesn't mean he wasn't born there - he just wasn't baptised at St Peter's. Not an entirely wasted visit, though, as I found a new Tilley for my wife's tree in 1885, just as I was going to stop looking. You could try searching for Beasley on the Dorset OPC site www.opcdorset.org - that might throw up something. Sorry I couldn't help.

Hi Richard

Thank you so much for doing that for me. I might have to ask for a look up in the Seaton, Devon Parish registers now. At least that eliminates St Peter's which had been nagging at me. Is it very common for people to not register births during that period? I seem to have managed to find everyone else - it is just this bloke that is eluding me.

I'm glad it wasn't a wasted visit for you. And this was a great help - thanks again.

Kerri

My mother's maiden name was Bazley, another variation of Beasley.  She lived in Parkstone and worshipped at St. Peter's.  Mum's father was Edward William Bazley, and he came from Somerset, but the family came from Stockland on the Devon/Dorset border.  There is someone called Roy Bazley (or derivation of the surname) and he has done masses of research.  I can't access my records at the moment due to building work, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find Roy using Google I suspect.

By strange coincidence I have a near neighbour called Beasley, her family also came from either Dorset or Somerset.

Thanks for that information too. I will look into it. It is amazing how many variations there can be on one name isn't it? You don't have a stray James born around 1883 in your family do you? :)
