Hi Sue,
I have some info on Errey/Maskell families. There were four Ruth Erreys in Camperdown/Cobden area in 1800s.
Ruth Errey (1849-1937) m. 1868? William Maskell (1847-1884). She was a daughter of Thomas Peter Errey and Mary Rose.
Elsie Ruth Errey (1867-1967) m. 1901 William Henry Maskell (1869-1928). She was a daughter of Elizabeth Errey and David Errey. Elizabeth was a daughter, and David a nephew, of Thomas Peter Errey. Thomas and co. emigrated to Australia in 1857.
Ruth Gaston/Barrow (1824-1899) m.1866 Benjamin Errey (1818-1893). They emigrated to Australia in 1870. (Benjamin was a brother/cousin of Thomas). They had a daughter Ruth Errey (1868-1928) who m.1893 Daniel Fenton Nicol (1868-1945).
I have an Errey book on loan that has quite a bit about Maskells. I can pass info on to you if you are still interested.
cheers,
Mandy

Hello!

I'm completing some research into my 3 X great-grandfather who is the same James Maskell discussed in this thread.

My research shows that he was born around 22 October 1814 at Heathfield, Sussex, but I'm struggling to find who his parents were or any history prior. Does anyone know of the history of James Maskell?

Would love any tips or help to find out a bit more.

Regards,

Tim Maskell

Hi Tim

We must be some sort of cousins, my 3 x gr grandfather was Alfred Mascall/Maskell born in Heathfield, East Sussex, UK and the brother of James.
I believe James Mascall and Philadelphia had two children William born 1846/7 and Thomas 1848/9
which line do you come from.
James Mascall father was Thomas Mascall.
Happy New Year
Best regards

Hi Sue;

Thanks so much for your response.  I have been stuck trying to find and family connections beyond James and you've given me some great leads with the name of his brother and father.  Thank you!

My paternal lineage is:

James Maskell / Mascall (m. Philadelphia Rose)
William Henry Maskell (m. Ruth Errey)
William Henry Maskell (m. Elsie Ruth Errey)
Norman William Maskell (m. Hazel Polley)
Allan Gilbert Maskell (m. Valma Bailey)

After arriving at the port of Geelong, James took up an allotment of farmland at Cobrico, Victoria, Australia and the property remains the family dairy farm.  Norman's eldest son Robert still lives on the property today although has retired from running the farm.  William Sr was keen on growing fruit and established an orchard with quite a few apple, mulberry and plum trees that remain today.

:)

Interested in your posts about the Maskells. My husband is a descendant of Thomas Maskell born 1807. Would love more information about the family. Husbands grandfather James left sussex in the early 1900's with his family bound for Rockhampton Australia. Left Australia because he didn't like it and settled in NZ.
