Begrie - Lost Family
« on: Monday 21 March 11 12:22 GMT (UK) »
looking for information on any family of my
Great Grandmother's sister - the last communication we had was in 1966 with a burial card -
Golden Age Club
Little Chapel on the Corner - interment Queens Park
100 Bow Vally Lodges
Mary Begrie - died Dec 11  1966
I think the above is Calgary.
Mary was born in Peterhead Scotland in 1893 - her parents were Peter Milne and Margaret Bruce. Her Husband William was a railway worker .
Mary had two daughters but one was killed in an accident - I think the other was Mrs J J Maier- her first name was Margaret so maybe the JJ was her husband.

would appreciate any information relating to this family.
Many thanks

You could try the on-line telephone directory at
www.canada411.ca
If you put in the surname Begrie, only 3 names come up, 1 in Calgary.
If you put in the name Maier, city Calgary, about 30 names come up.
You will find telephone numbers and mailing addresses.

You could also contact Queen's Park Cemetery to see if they can give you any information.

I would suggest using Peel's Prairie Provinces (http://peel.library.ualberta.ca) and do a search for Begrie in the bibliography section.

This link http://peel.library.ualberta.ca/bibliography/2961.14/303.html?qid=peelbib%7Cbegrie%7C%7Cscore will show you a search of the 1919 Henderson's Directory for Calgary, showing William and several other members of the family living in Calgary.  I'm assuming that the Lizzie and Maggie shown on this page are the two daughters you speak of.

There are several entries throughout the Henderson's directories showing this family in various homes, but William and Mary seem to have lived at 2935 17A Street East for a good portion of their lives.

William and Mary are buried in Queen's Park Cemetery, William died in 1945, Mary in 1966 as you know.

Queen's Park cemetery has Patricia Mary Milne Begrie with a date of death in 1950.  I think this is the other daughter as in 1948 she is living at the address noted in the previous post and working at Laval Cleaners.  I wonder if the other Begrie's in Queen's Park Cemetery and in the directories were brothers of William.

In the 1948 Calgary directory you find Joseph J. Maier, labourer Calgary Brewing and Malting living at 1024 7 A St. E.  Perhaps the husband of Margaret.  He is possibly buried St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery Calgary with dates 1913-1991.

this link gets you to some of the Henderson directories but they also offer a pay service for obituaries.  Perhaps if you found the obituary for Joseph J. Maier it would be useful in tracing forward.

Hello,

My Name is Jodi Begrie-Rodier.  I am the Grand-daughter of Mayhew (Ted) Begrie. And my is Father Wayne Edwin Begrie.  You are correct with your information.  My Grandpa "Ted" Begrie worked at the Calgary Brewery together with his brother for a long time. And as for their daughters you are right, one did die in an accident and it was a very strange one.  From what I remember my Grandpa telling me, she was driving through a railway crossing and she was hit by an oncoming train.  She walked away from from the accident and even though the family wanted to take her to the hospital, she refused and said she just needed to lie down. Well she never woke up. She had a major head trauma and never knew about it.  If you would like more information, my Dad said he would be more than happy to tell you what he knows. (*)

Thanks,

Jodi Begrie-Rodier

HELLO.
My daughter was correct except that Joe Maier also worked at the Calgary Brewery . I was only 10 years old when Pat was killed at a railway crossing so I didn't know her that well.  I was 16 when Marry died, I passed her house every day going to school. I only wish I had payed more attention to our fam. history when there were still some   of my relatives were   alive.  There was 10 children in the Begrie fam. that came to Canada from Scotland in the early 1900s.  They lived in Banff and  Aberdeen before comming to Canada

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply. My grandmother was Mary's oldest sister. The youngest sister died in 2004 in her 100th year and it was her biggest regret that all contact with Mary's family was lost.

There was another daughter- are there any of her family still alive? I live in  a small village beside Peterhead where Mary was born and brought up.

My email is (*) should you wish to communicate off list,

Thanks  Again,

Margie

I am Mary's grandson and may have some of the information you seek. I am sending a copy to my sister who may know a little more.  The information you have so far is mostly correct as I recall. We have some pictures of various people but they may be mostly of the Milne's in Peterhead. I'll upload these later.
I had found some Begries listed on Ancestors.com in Aberdeen but not being registered I couldn't find out much.
I was told by a cousin that the Milnes (my great grandparents) are buried in Burns Cemetary in Calagry.

I am sorry it has taken so long to reply but I have had health problems and have been unable to sit for lengthy periods. I would love to have more information and to update you on all the Peterhead family.
