Forman's Pub & Blucher Hall next door:
 
My family used to own Blucher Hall until about 1910 I believe, so I am interested in the history of both these properties.  I am also interested in photos if anyone has some.  I was contacted once by the current owner but have lost the contact information.  I can be reached at (*)
From what I understand, at one time both properties were owned by the same individual as well as a stable that was later converted to a road house. I expect that is the current Mrs. Forman's Pub.  I have attempted to attach a photo, hopefully it links correctly.  It's from about 1880.
My family were Frasers & Stewarts, and Aikman married my ggrandfathers sister Margaret and they were living there as well as my ggrandfather Robert, and his daughters Christina and Catherine.  Margaret & Roberts father Donald had been with Blucher at Waterloo and remained friends, so from old letters and family stories I gather Blucher Hall gained it's name from that friendship, as Blucher stayed with them when he was in town, and from what I understand he had something to do with how the property came to belong to Donald.
I am also interested in burial information

Hi Katherine,

I am originally from Port Seton, and I know Mrs Forman's well as I used to play golf there. Mrs Forman's was owned by Punch Taverns as my son was interested in it a few years ago. However not heard of Blucher Hall in that area, have you an address?

My mother was a Stewart and her grandmother was a Fraser from the Prestonpans area, mostly miners.

Dear Katherine, our ancestor was George Forman who build Mrs Formans in 1841. I think they are listed as living at Blucher Hall in the 1841 census. George's wife was Marion Bowman. I have a copy of Mrs Formans C.1934 will try to find and attach asap. regards Serene

Found a good link on history of Mrs Formans,

It shows a photo of Marion Forman and a good deal of history. On Old Maps.com , found a map that shows Blucher Hall marked where Mrs Forman's was in 1854. The golf course was not shown then, but the racecourse was.

Thanks Monica..  Wondering if anyone knows anything about where Marion Bowman was born?  I cannot seem to unlock that mystery yet.  IGI listed father as Robert.

Also burial place for Charles Forman son of Marion.  He was a salt maker of Tranent. Cheers Serene

Hi Serene

The 1851 census gives Marion's birth place as Musselburgh, c. 1805. There is a Margaret Bowman, visitor, born c. 1815 in Portobello also showing in the household at Leven Hall in 1851.

Marion's death cert details for her parents' names might be a good place to check to help you work back.

Thanks Monica.  I rechecked some of my IGI info and have a James Bowman and Marion Addie.  I think the death cert is the way to go though to get a more certain name although it is dependent on the accuracy of the informant even then.  I did get the will but not the death certificate at the same time. Silly me!  Sue
