Help with 1841 Census
« on: Sunday 20 March 11 22:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help with finding a Lewis Francis Augustus Bertolle in the 1841 Census?
He married Sarah in 1794, so am surmising he'd be born about 1770/5. I think Sarah was probably dead before 1841.
I can't find either of them!
He died 1843 in Wandsworth, and we think he may have come from France.

His eldest son Lewis b 1795 was by this time in Dunbartonshire (transcribed as Bertolli) with his wife and son. Father Lewis doesn't seem to be with them.
HIs next son James is married to Jane. Jane and 2 children are in Hounslow, but faher James doesn't seem to be with them. Nor grandfather Lewis.
In 1851, James and son are back in London, and Jane and 6 more children are in Surrey.

There was also a daughter Elizabeth born 1803, but I haven't found out any more
about her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Thanks Janinez
I'd got this Scottish Census and the births of Lewis jnr and Elizabeth. It is them. Both Lewis snr and Lewis jnr were dyers - later on Lewis jnr states he was even a 'master dyer'!
I'm guessing Archibald MCauley's occupation as 'Cal Prin' my be Calico printer? J for journeyman?
Still looking for Lewis senior though! - one of my 'brickwalls'

Cheers

I can't find him on the census either, but I can help you out a bit with his daughter Elizabeth who my husband is descended from.  She was born in 1803 as you know and married someone called Middleditch, sorry I don't know his first name. As far as I know they didn't have any children.  Mr Middleditch died and then she married my husbands ancestor, John Sergeant, in Freckenham, Suffolk on 2nd May 1938.  On their marriage cert her fathers christian name is spelt as Louis and his profession is a Steward!

If you get anywhere with Louis Francis Augustus Bertolle please let me know, he is also one of my brick walls!

Cheers, Lisa

Wow!
Thanks Cath.
An very interesting entry.
As you say, could be him. I'm guessing MS is Male Servant?
What's the name of the family he is with? And they just didn't know his name?!
I wonder if he is still there in 1851?

Nice to hear from you Lisa.
It seems as if Lewis (Louis) was no longer a dyer by the time Elizabeth marries- so could fit in with the 'servant' Cath found on the 1841 Census. I guess you have found Elizabeth and John Sergeant in 1841 and he's not with them? (another idea I had in trying to break the wall!).

I come down through Lewis junior's daughter Elizabeth b 1816, who moved to Scotland with her parents, and married three times dying in 1890 in Paisley.

Keep in touch
Cheers

Hi,
If it's a help, here's the younger Lewis in business in 1822: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/17876/pages/2009 (third down, second column).

Hi,
Don t think the family is of any help, can t find them in 1851 but Lewis/Louis had died by then. You might get some clues from his death certificate of 1843.

High Street ,Putney and Wandsworth

Emma Clark        20  FS     Y
Thomas Payne    45  MS    Y
Charles Dennis   20  MS    Y
Louis N. K           60  MS    f

So a small family with several servants. How annoying the enumerator not pressing for Louis' surname  :(

Good luck in your search
