Hi Val

Happy to help and hope you do find all you want about your family.

Just noticed on your list of names of interest that you have Swales as one
of them.  I presume you have seen the 1881 census where I found Alexander Stephenson living with daughter Mary Ann.  Forgot to mention on the list of names there were also three Grandchildren who were Swales.
Alexander Swales ll, Zacharia 9, Jane 14/
Also further down the street about 3 houses away there is another
Alexander Stephenson living with his Mother who is 62, called Sarah Lee.
Alexander is married to someone called Sexter (never heard that name before) aged 21 his wife, and Alexander a child aged 9mths.
Are these yours as well??
I come across Swales and Stephensons alot as my family come from North Yorkshire as well and they normally live in the same street as my family names and I also have Stevensons with a V.
Take care and if you need any more help let me know as I look at the Yorkshire people more than others.

Hi Sandymc

I have lots of Swales and Stephensons in my Tree.  My greatgrandmother was a Swales and her mother was a Stephenson.   The Swales and Stephensons were travelling families, hawkers, potters, earthenware dealers etc.  and repeatedly intermarried as well as with other certain families.   The Travelling People board on this site is full of information about them all.  The ones you mentioned are all in my Tree.

I became so fascinated with them all and so many other people are trying to sort them all out that I just keep adding more besides my direct line which I am still trying to put together,

Thanks for your interest.

Hello,  I am interested in verifying a marriage between Jonathan Russell, b. ca 1764, and Anne Unknown, b. ca 1766, both of Kirbymoorside.  Believe eldest child to be Christopher Russell b. 1793, so that may be approximately when the marriage occurred.  Appreciate any help.

Dear Sandymc,

Thank you soooooo much!  I am most delighted to have this.  So, Ann's (with no "e") family name was Allan!  Yes, I have 8 children for Christopher & his wife Rebecca in my record: William, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Christopher, Rebecca, David, Hannah.  I believe this family, or part of it, arrived at the Port of New York aboard the Chester in 1843.  From there they came to Ontario, although I cannot account for all the children.  I am descended from David, or so I believe.

Is the source you used accessible to me?  I am guessing it is possible that "Russel" with one "l" somehow became "Russell" with 2 "l's"?

With thanks, Jaunty

Hi Jinty

This can be find on www.FamilySearch.org which is the Latter day
Saints site which is free to access (as far as a I know) from wherever
you are.  Just a note about saying they were born in Kirbymoorside.
Alot of people chose the largest village to say they were born in as not
everyone could spell in those days.  Helmsley is about 6 miles from
Kirbymoorside and I presume this is where Ann was either born or
moved to when she was young.  You have to be a little flexible
with the spelling and the whereabouts in those days.  Dont forget
not many could write, read or spell and they like myself were not
told much as children, as they should be seen and not heard,
I even had that in my youth.  Hope this is your Ann and Jonathan
as  mentioned just be flexible with the interpretations.
They were born not far from alot of my family as you can see
Yorkshire, Yorkshire etc
regards
Sandymc

Dear Sandymc,

I appreciate the information on Helmsley.  Also, good advice on the flexibility issue.  I am quite sure about this family.  Everything fits, in spite of some disappearing children. Again, that was not uncommon at the time.  Children died or left home.  In this case some stayed behind while the parents and younger children went to America and then Canada.  It must have been hard to break up a family like that.  Yes, "seen and not heard."  Children had a very definite PLACE when I was growing up.  Your help with this has been amazing -- thank so much.  I will check LDS as you suggest.

Jaunty
