nuns at middleton, pickering
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have any knowledge of the history of Middleton, near Pickering, in particular the nunnery or field near the village church known as "Nun's Garth"?
Thanks

Hi thought you might be interested in what we have found any information before the 11th century or about the Manor House would be welcome
The Manor house mentioned in the 11 th century, was situated behind the present New Tavern {until recently and from its origin in the 17th century known as the New Inn). Rosedale Priory ran the Middleton manor house until the Rosedale nunneries were abolished in the 16th century. Since that time the site has been known as Nuns' Garth and earthworks were uncovered in a nearby field. Dave
