I can't date photos which is why I rely on the lovely people on this site, but as a qualified passport examiner, we look for ears, eyebrows and then turn the photos upside down to compare eye brows and shape of jaw lines. Strange I know but it works, ears and shape of eye brows don't change much

I'd seen passport people turning the things upside down but never knew why!

Not sure of the science, but I think it makes you concentrate on areas u don't usually look at,and allows u to see them in a different light, people are drawn most often to the eyes in a photo, and these change as do your cheek bones as u put on or loose weight and grow older, your eye brows and jaw line show your skull shape.
Try it, it works (along with the ears if you can see them lol)  Apparently someone recently was charged for his ear print as it is as individual as a finger print)

Yes, we look at ears and noses when trying to decide if a person in one old photo is the same as in another one...if we really want to make a big deal of it we look at the distance between pupils, width of mouth, length of philtrum and length of face from the eyeline to the bottom of the chin. But I never heard of the eyebrow thing

You Jim and Pru r the experts on here, never gonna argue with what u say :-)

Sounds like its all the same science, trying to see the shape of the skull, if u think of it your eyebrows mirror the skull underneath, they only move up or down other things can stretch, shrink or get fat, but definitely  recommend turning the photo upside down.

btw I still have lots of photos which require your expert opinion on dating on this site, just haven't uploaded them yet, so look forward to your help
