I am not sure whether it is the same today but you should understand that a Royal Marine was a ' soldier and sailor too' (Apologies to Rudyard Kipling) and that was quite true because on shore the Royal Marines came under
Army regulations
and at sea the
Admiralty regulations.
The gangplank being the dividing point.

I know it's difficult to read, but I think the word is actually 'Mangling', a part of the laundry business, in which many women were involved at that time.

I don't think that is correct. If you look at the formation of the 'M' in the preceding column for 'Mother' and in the lines below for 'Mariner', it bears no resemblance. The first letter is formed as per the 'H' in 'Head' of the preceding column.
Also if they were involved in the laundry business I would expect them to be entered as 'Laundress' as per the entry below them.
