The Elusive John Martin
« on: Thursday 17 March 11 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find the birth, death and burial place of my 3x g.grandfather John Martin.   Known children are:-
Margaret Martin, born c1824 married John Whetton 1845.
William Martin, born c1826 married Mary Jackson 1844.
Robert Martin, born c1827 married Elizabeth Wright 1849.
Josiah Martin, born c1829 married Sarah Cook 1854. (Widow).
Henry Martin, born c1834 married Charlotte Lovatt 1861.

All born and lived in Loughborough.   I am descended from Robert.   I have marriage certificates for the above 5, on two the father's (John Martin) occupation is given as Soldier and on three as Bookkeeper.

John does not appear on the 1841 census - only his wife and the four boys.   Ann's age is given as 45 so born about 1796.   In September 1842 John's wife Ann Martin marries a John Oldershaw (Eldershaw) and on the m.cert. her "condition" is given as 'widow'.   I am assuming, rightly or wrongly, that if Henry was the last child to be born, his father John must have died between 1834 and Ann's remarriage in 1842.   Also on this marriage certificate it gives her father as George Dufty.   The only marriage I could trace for a John Martin and Ann Dufty was in Radford, Nottingham 4th December, 1815.   The PR states 'both of Nottingham Barracks a place Extraparochial', both signed their names in the presence of John Plackett, Joseph Nooke and (what looks like) Caroline Haford.   They were married by banns with consent of parents.

I don't know where John was born but Ann was born in Barrow-on-Soar.

I have looked on the NBI but no luck also on Freebmd 1837-42, could not check 1834/36,since these records only start at 1837.

If anyone has any ideas where I can go from here or if anyone is tracing any of the above mentioned, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Katy.

Hi Diddy,

Would appreciate anything you can find.   The Martins all seemed to have married at Emmanuel Church, Loughborough.

Thanks for the offer of help, if you do manage to find anything other than what I have it will certainly be a miracle and a brick wall well and truly knocked down.

I have the Baptisms of the four boys, it is their elusive father who is proving difficult.   I inadvertently sent for the same death certificate twice to find that it was for a two day old baby.    Silly me!!

Katy.

not much luck - can't find a baptism for john martin checked index 1791 - 1812 L'boro.
burials for 1834 -1842 - nothing!

marriage you have is in Notts IGI. - maybe someone on Notts board can check it for you. might be parents as witnesses.

Leics IGI has several John Martins born around Leics for dates around 1785 - 1800.

found one John martin bap in L'boro (not yours -too late)
25/4/1823 s/o John & Ann L'boro Dead lane primitive Methodist church.

if you can get the marriage checked though the witnesses may be parents.

Hi again Diddy,

In your last post you asked if I could get the marrige checked.   I did mention in my first post that the Parish Register for Radford, Nottingham stated that John Martin and Ann Dufty were married on the 4th December, 1815 "both of Nottingham Barracks a place extraparochial", both signed their names in the presence of (Witnesses) 1. John PLACKETT, 2. Joseph NOOKE and 3. Caroline HAFORD.   I do have a copy of this marriage taken from the actual Parish Register.

So it looks as though neither parents were in attendance.   As you can see - a brick wall.

I am grateful for your interest and help - thank you so much

Katy.
