Byrn / Byrne family 1840s
« on: Thursday 17 March 11 11:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am hoping someone may be able to help break down my brick wall.

My Byrne family consisting of John and wife Eleanor (also known as Ellen) plus children Mary, James and Catherine arrived in Tasmania Australia in 1854. Each of the family members are listed as being born in Kilkenny Ireland. Ages stated are John 35 (although could be 25), Eleanor 29, Mary 10, James 3 and Catherine 1. Mary's age also may not be quite correct as she married in 1862 at the age of 15 years.
Unfortunately the shipping document does not give more information as to where in Kilkenny they were from.

I am hoping the combination of names and ages may single them out in maybe Catholic baptism, marriages or such records. I have attempted to research them online with no luck.

When you say you've searched for them online do you mean the IFHF/RootsIreland website ?

You really need to know the parish they came from to check what records are available. [O']Byrne is a very common surname in Ireland so the more details you can come up with to start your search the better chance you have of finding your Byrne family.

see :

  Introduction to Irish Records
Details included on a Birth Cert

p.s. do you have Eleanor's maiden surname ?
Marriage (for one of the children) and death certs often contain useful details such as this..

Thanks for your input Shane,

Unfortunately I know neither the exact parish the family came from in Kilkenny nor Eleanor's maiden name. Unfortunately none of the births of her children born in Tasmania were registered. Marriages for her children were before parental information was included on certificates and death records for married children in Tasmania do not include the parents names so really no way of telling what Eleanor's maiden name was.

Yes I am a member of RootsIreland and have not had any success there as yet.

Dawn,
I am having no luck sending messages with information about our Byrne family to you for some reason.  I would like to send a private e-mail. Can you send me a PM with your e-mail address.  This is apparently a non public and confidential system of communicating.
