Look-Up Please Henry PAYNE Immigration
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 07:14 GMT (UK) »
:)  Maybe born in Sussex, 1827, baptised in Burwash, parents William and Elizabeth, I think, then marries Sarah AVARD in Australia in 1853.  That much is definate. He died in 1882, buried at Tarro NSW, where a cemetary inscription gives his age at death and names his wife as Sarah. His record of death also names his parents as William and Elizabeth.  I have ordered a full transcript of his death certificate, which I have been told will give his length of time in Australia. No record of Henry being born in NSW.  No convict record fits these dates.  No immigration record found for him or father William. Can anyone help? Could he have been born in another Australian state?

Hi there,

And agree with Neil WELCOME to RChat

The marriage for Henry Payne to Sarah Avard would be 30 March 1853 at Maitland NSW as per the online index at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

Re Could he have been born in another Australian state?   He may have been born in any one of the Colonies, and also it may be worthwhile if you look in New Zealand too.  It is also sensible to consider that the passenger lists often only show the names of those who travelled in cabins while those in steerage were simply "x numbers in steerage".

There's links to the various states/colonies on the Australian Resources Board at this link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html
and to New Zealand at this link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,299.0.html

Have you considered various spellings for PAYNE ...

Hi there,

On the 1870 NSW Electoral Roll for East Maitland (ie Tarro is nearby)
William PAYNE, leaseholder at Alnwick
Henry PAYNE, leaseholder at Alnwick

On the 1878 NSW ER for East Maitland
William PAYNE Snr leaseholder at Alnwick
William PAYNE Jnr residence at Alnwick
Henry PAYNE, leaseholder at Alnwick

If this is your family, then it suggests to me that Henry's father may have migrated too.

Cheers,  JM

And,  AVARD (Sarah's nee name) is found on the East Maitland Electoral Roll too

1870 NSW ER East Maitland
David AVARD, household at Berry Park

1878 NSW ER East Maitland
David AVARD, household at Woodford
Thomas AVARD, residence at Alnwick.

There's a Thomas AVARD, aged 31, farm labourer with wife aged 27 on the State Records Index for Misc. Immigrants arriving on the Westminster 27 June 1838.   He is also listed on the 1841 NSW Census as at Patricks Plains, Northumberland county.

Thank you  :-* to all those who replied so quickly - it will give me some work to over the next few days looking in places I would never have considered.  Henry  had me baffled because I couldn't find him, but I didn't think of looking at our friends across the Tasman, or realize that passengers in steerage would not be named! I am still fairly new at this caper but with help like yours I can learn so much more.

Thanks again

Thanks,

Do you have the newspaper cutting for Henry and Sarah's marriage?

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser Saturday 2 April 1853

Trove newspapers is a great project of the National Library of Australia  http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper

Hi Convictlass,

You don't say where you got the information regarding Henry being born in Sussex but having a look at Familysearch I can also see siblings for this Henry - William, Alfred, Hannah and Harriet.  https://www.familysearch.org/

The following family arriving in 1839 on the Neptune have details which match them:

William PAYNE, 41, labourer, native of Heathfield, Sussex, son of John PAYNE, labourer, and Elizabeth (of Mayfield? difficult to read)
wife died in England

His children:
Alfred, 14 (April 14)
Henry, 12 (August 14)
William, 10 (March 8th)
Hannah, 18, (Nov 27), dairymaid
Harriet, 16, (June 23), dairymaid

This is from the entitlement certificates, it doesn't look like there is a passenger list for this ship.

I suspect that brother William married Sarah's sister:
