You have the birth name of his first wife Mary, down as Crookham. I thought her birth name was Bew. Could you confirm it for me. All the dates are correct, so I just wonder if,  perhaps, she was born by one name and took another later (perhaps a stepfather?).

No, Crookham wasn't shown as Mary's name, but her place of birth as given in the 1851 census.  Crookham Common is adjacent to Thatcham.

The additional notes were compiled from parish registers and census returns, where available, so are subject to the usual errors, misunderstandings and lies!  ;D  You should enjoy the little book with its scurrilous remarks, and you'll find some more Rumbles in there too, as well as the Deacons.

I would be looking in the Thatcham PR for the missing son, probably the eldest.  It was common for a woman to go home to her mother to have her first child, so he may have been baptised there too.

Thanks for clearing that up.   ;D

Hi there,
Count me in too, I'm descended from Henry Rumble, son of Giles and Elizabeth (Prior) Rumble baptised at EI on 15 Feb 1745/6 who married Ann Penn in Cholsey on 14/02/1776.  I also haven't got back any further then Giles and Mary (Lyons) Rumble in East Ilsley, but be happy to share what I do have.

Hello Ermy  ;D  I am descended from Henry's younger brother John (1757) son to Giles & Mary Curttis.  Laura and I went off post to fill in the gaps in the tree - only because there was a lot of emails - would be great to hear where you are with the family and to share info. I will PM shortly with John Rumble details...

Hi Guys,
I know this is an old post, but I’ve only just stumbled across it.
Is anyone still searching this family tree? I’m also a descendant of Giles Rumble, Bumbald or Rumbold.

Be interested if anyone had more information.

Many thanks

Steven

Hi, I just discovered this thread today

Descended from Giles Rumble etc son Thomas.

I'm interested in Emma Rumble born 1837...did she really have 7 illegitimate children as well as the two by Richard Mills...or was she married to a cousin with the same name?

Amanda

Then it’s my great grandad Alfred and my Grandad Ernest Rumble

That's an interesting one!

Banns were called for Richard Mills and Emma Rumble in September 1858 but the register notes
"NB Not married.  Three months expired Dec 19."
They finally got around to tying the knot on 12 September 1875.  Better late than never!

Emma seems to have had ten children before the two born in wedlock.  Three died in infancy.  Of course the Rector would have been aware that Richard & Emma weren't married. I think it was the same incumbent throughout the period of interest.

In 1861 Emma was living with her sister Martha and the two eldest children, Elizabeth Ann and William Richard, but I don't know where Richard was.
In 1871 Richard and Emma appear to be living together with all the children, but he is shown separately as a lodger, so that was glossed over  ;)
And in 1881 the whole family appears as Mills.

Do you have the baptisms for all the children?  Most of them have godparents entered as well, which is a nice bonus.
