edward & margaret atherton m1873.
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 12:53 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me solve this puzzle?
Edward and Margaret Atherton are in Hindley Green on the 1881 census as ages 23 and 25 with two children.
It states Edwards as 23 born 1857 in Hindley Green. His son Thomas age 7, meaning Ewd age would have been 16 when Thos was born .
I have found the marriage of Edward Atherton(age 20) and Margaret Wynn (age 22) 1873, All Saints,Wigan, both fathers are deceased.
Margarets age seems correct in the 1881 census but
I cannot find Edwards birth record. I am looking in Hindley and Wigan.
Margaret has disappeared in the 1891 census think she died?
The family are dispersed I think they are living in Parr I have yet to be certain?
Any help greatfully received  ::)

had a look at the marr cert on familysearch which says Edward's father was Edward. I looked for Edward born C 1851. (according to age at marriage)

There is an Edward in Hindley

1851 Hindley Common

Edward Atherton 39 caster for colliery Hindley
Jane                     31 wife                     Wrightington Lancs
John                    10                             Hindley
Margaret               8                              Hindley
Edward                  2                              Hindley
John Bell           19 Lodger                     Blackburn

In 1861 family is still in Hindley, Edward is the eldest child living at home with younger siblings Mary born c1854 and Ralph born c1858 both in Hindley

Had a look at the 1891 census and saw that Edward and Margaret's youngest child Elizabeth E was born C 1887 in St Helens. There is a death of a Margaret Atherton in Prescot Mar q 1891 aged 35 which is the right age and area

Hi there
If Margaret was 22 at her marriage and that was in 1873 her year of
birth would be around 1851.
I did look at the Lancashire BMD and there is a Margaret Atherton who
died in 1891 aged 40 which would make it the correct age. It was
registered as Hindley, Wigan and Leigh.
There is always a scope of about 5 years difference in the correct age
on census returns.  If you find out she is a little older than I have just
stated then there is another Margareth Atherton on the Lancashire
BMD who died in Hindley as she was aged 45 in the year  1889.
Hope this helps
