William J DAVIS
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to help me find the birthplace and parents of William J Davis; Born in 1870/1871 perhaps in Jugiong or Narrandera in NSW. Rumour has it, in the family, that he was born "on the wrong side of the blanket" We think his mother may have been an Irish servant girl by the name of Rose McDermott. In his life he never spoke much of his parents although we know his children visited a "Grandma Rose" in the very early 1900's.
There was a William J Davis born in Orange in 1870, but we have established that it was not him.
Grateful for any suggestions or information that you could share.
Sandra

Hi there,

Looking at Rose McDermott ...

There's a marriage for a Rose J  McDermott to a Charles BOOTY indexed on NSW BDM online.  This was registered in the Sydney District in 1874.  Reference 172/1874 so it may have been celebrated in late 1873 as 172 is very low number.  I am not sure if Rose and Charles BOOTY stayed in NSW as I have not found any children's births registered.

If that Rose was your William J Davis' mum then the marriage cert should give Rose's parents details as well as information about Rose.

Transcripts of NSW certificates are cheaper and quicker than actual certificates and provide the same information

Hi Susan, Possibility of a birth to a Margaret McDermott of William father not known strangely two; one in 1868 and another in 1877 on NSW BDM.
High Probability of name Margaret Rose McDermott in Irish nameing William may also have found out his FATHERS TRUE NAME then changed his. I cannot find your William J Davis's Record of Death on NSW BDM? Do you know where he died and when? UNLESS
32475/1955  DAVIS  RICHARD WILLIAM  WILLIAM THOMAS  MARGARET ROSE in Narrabri NSW.

Just found this???
Mary A McDermott,MacDonnell, married James Davis at Yass in 1865.
ref:3557/1865
They had a son William J born 1871 registered Queenbeyan
ref:16637/1871
Only another lead but years and proximity to Jugiong which probably would be registered at Yass.

Re McDermott and Queanbeyan

1870, NSW Electoral Roll, Queanbeyan electorate
Edward McDERMOTT, residence in Town of Queanbeyan

1878 NSW ER, Queanbeyan electorate
Edward McDermott, residence at Yarralumla

I note that the Australian Governor General's residence is known as Yarralumla, and there's also a suburb of Canberra with that name!

EDIT TO ADD, from 1875 Grevilles Directory for Queanbeyan, Edward McDermott was a farmer.

Thanks JM and Neil. Will definitely follow up on James and Mary. and the Edward McDermott mentioned in the Grevilles and Electoral Roll. However there is MORE
Family folklore says that Rose or Mary, sometime after William was born...know not where or when... married a Mr O'Neill and had children to him . He was supposedlly the forebear of Norrn O'Neil the cricketer.  She was supposedly living with her daughter and grandchildren in Sydney in about 1920.
Have messaged Mark O'Neill, Norm's son on Facebook.and he has added me as a friend but as yet no reply.
Have spent many hours , no many days or is it weeks working on this. Wish there was a face with someone pulling their hair out.

Thanks again both of you for your interest.
Sandra

Hi Sandra, I dont know who Rose is but it could be a nickname only. It looks like the Mary Davis Married to Henry died at Yass in 1904.

It would seem unlikely that this is the same family unless the "Folklore" is a bit off? She had another 4 children to Henry Davis at Queanbeyan?

Other is Norman O'Neill came from my neck of the woods born late 1930's my brother played against/with him at Kogarah. I felt he came from an old Carlton family. I would be interested to find out if you do, the connection..
