Peed/Pied/Pead/Peade family, Cork

Hi

Looking to trace Edmond Peed, a labourer.  Not too sure where he came from.  Have information on an Edward Peed from Barrack Steet, Cork and he seems to maybe fit the bill.  Our Edmond had one daughter that we know of, Ellen, born circa 1844, place unknown, but she was married in Douglas, Cork to Thomas Beale in 1868.  If they followed the naming tradition for their children, then Ellen's mother should be Mary.

There are Peeds in Ballyfeard, Barrack Street, Bandon and Kinsale but can't seem to link him to any of them.

I would love to find out where Ellen was born and who her mother was.  Ellen is listed as a "gongle" owner on her marriage cert, any clues to what this is?  Any information would be great.

Did you have a look at the www.irishgenealogy.ie site.   There are quite a few "Peeds" on it.  A few entries for Edmond  but short version of name to Edmd  .

Just enter Peed only in search and Cork for location and there are three pages of entries.  You might find some new information.  A lot around Barrack Street area,  Three Hatchett Lane ( off Barrack St) also Bandon Road area -basically all in same area.   

There is only one entry for surname  Pead in the Cork telephone directory and nothing for Peed.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for that.  I've come across two and a possible marriage which would tie in with the naming tradition of Ellen (the daughter) children.  I've something more to go on now.  How do you figure out which one would the the right one for the birth?  Both have mother's called Ellen.  Thanks again for your help.

Remember that the IrishGenealogy website only has records for less than half of Co. Cork (mostly south west city and county), so there could be other potential matches outside the area you are currently searching.

Do any of the records you have on the Peed/Pead family indicate what part of Co. Cork they came from ?

Thanks Shane.  I have nothing to go on to say where they came from, only that Ellen married Thomas Beale in Douglas Cork in 1868, with her father listed as Edmond, a labourer. 

We did get a genealogist report a while back but it was for Edward Peed, b. 1804, in Barrack Street however, no definitive marriage, children or other information could be found other than he died of alcohol related illness in 1865.  Nothing either about Ellen or where she was born.  She wasn't born in Douglas parish though as they've checked for me.

I've double checked the subsequent generations and they are a mix of Edmonds and Edwards so not sure if its the same person in Barrack Street.  I think maybe one of the Edmund's in Barrack Street (on the irish genealogy site) however could be a possibility but its a bit confusing with the name.

How do I figure which one or where to find a marriage for Edmond?

Ellen Peed and Thomas Beale's children were Mary Catherine, Ellen, Thomas, John and Edward, so if they were going on the naming traditions, Ellen's parents were Edmond (Edward) and Ellen Peed.  Edward Beale's son was then Edmond, as was his son.

Further RC records are due to be added to the IrishGenealogy website later this year, but they will only cover additional details in the Diocese of Cork & Ross (West Cork).

One point to keep in mind is that not all parishes have records back to the early 1800s so you could be searching for a record that doesn't exist.

Where did Ellen and her husband end up ?

I've a feeling that thats the case, ie. it doesn't exist. 

Ellen and Thomas lived in Douglas and all the further generations (including myself) are from there.  None of the family had heard of the name Peed before I got the marriage cert for Ellen and Thomas.

I'll keep searching and hopefully something might turn up in the further records.  Thanks for the help and advice,

RC Baptism and Marriage records for Douglas go back to about 1812, so if Ellen was baptised in the area she should show up in the IrishGeneaology details... if the records are complete.

Most of the city records go back far enough to include a baptism for Ellen, and possibly her parents marriage - the problem could be that they may have moved from somewhere outside the city after Ellen's birth.

Hopefully something will show up on IrishGenealogy in one of the future updates.

Douglas Church (extremely helpful)  have searched every variations of the name for me on a few occasions and nothing so I don't think she was born in the area or that her parents were married there but will wait and see what turns up in the future ig records. thanks Shane.
