NEWQUAY - The Island - 'Edgar & Carrie' ( HOCKING ? ?)
« on: Monday 14 March 11 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Chatting with my mum, she remembers  my Great Granny & her cousin, Lena, travelling by train to Newquay once a year to visit cousins who lived on The Island at Newquay. Mum remembers that they were called Edgar & Carrie - but has no recollection of their surname. I have been puzzling over who they were & how they were related to my Great Granny, but so far I have not had any luck.

If there is anyone out there who either knew them, or who can point me in the right direction to finding out who they were, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks.
James

Postscript: Just read this to Mum - she now thinks the surname could have been 'HOCKING' - this would make sense as one of my Great Granny's aunts, Mary Jane Berryman married a Thomas Hocking - however, it would be useful to be able to confirm whether or not they had a son called Edgar - looking at the BMD index, there is a birth record of an Edgar Hocking  born in 1877 - but I don't think this was him (Mary Jane and Thomas weren't until married 29 Oct of  that year) - maybe the census records might show some light on this matter ... from what mum has told me, I got the feeling that he was nearer my Great Granny's age, and she was born in 1899.

Post - Postscript : Just found BMD index entry for an Edgar Hocking born 1909 - would be interesting to see if he turns up on a census.

Hi,

Cornwall Census 1841-1891 are free Online

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

However Edgar was not born until 1909 so will only be available in the 1911 census

1911 census requests are not permitted - please see:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355484.0.html

The index is free to search and there are lots of suggestions on making the most of Free Searches:

Using the free index He is in the St Austell District. Looks like his parents are Edgar 33 and Hannah30. Looking to earlier Cenuses this Edgar was born in Mevagissey about 1878. (you can check these yourself) I don't see a Newquay connection at this stage. Do we have any clue as to the  age of these people. When was great granny visiting them? Anything to give a clue.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hmmmm .... the Mevagissey part makes me think this isn't the right Edgar ... I suppose Edgar could have been a middle name that was used.
My Great Granny would have been visiting them when Mum was about 10 or so ...so roughly 1958, if thats a help.

If it's the Thomas Hocking that married my Great Granny's Auntie, who was this Edgar's father  - both he and she were born in Zennor.

I am sorry you have lost me. Who was born in Zennor? Which Edgar are you talking about? I thought we were looking for someone in Newquay.  :-\

OK I can see this Thomas and  Mary Jane in 1901. 1881 and 1891 he is not at home. They do not seem to have had a son Edgar and do not seem connected to Newquay.  ???

Perhaps we should try to concentrate on Edgar and Carrie - surname unknown.

Back to Newquay if I have an idea of how old they were I can try to see if an Edgar and Carrie baptised children in Newquay. Do we have any idea how old these people would have been in 1958 - of course if we are talking living persons this conversation will have to close. (bit concerned now 1958 is mentioned unless Edgar and Carrie were elderly at this time.)

I imagine they would have beem of a similar age to my Great Granny (born 1899) - so no worries of them still being alive.

I wonder if Thomas & Mary jane had a son after 1901 called Edgar ?

Thomas and Mary Jane do not appear to have had a son Edgar. There is an Edgar born in 1909 but he is not their son. This Edgar appears to have married Isabel Menhenott. There is no marriage for an Edgar HOCKING = Car*. I wondered if mum may have been related to Carrie not Edgar. The only death for an  Edgar HOCKING is the chap born in 1909. I have looked through the Newquay baptisms and alas no sign of an Edgar and Carrie surname unknown baptising children. Also trying for  a marriage between and  Edgar unknown and Car* nothing showing in St Col District/St Austell after 1936. (in fact very  few in Cornwall)

Hopefully some other information which may help will turn up.

Like you, I have had no luck in tracking down a likely marriage ... Mum could well be related to Carrie, as opposed to Edgar  ... I hope that with 'The Island' being a very well known property in Newquay that someone may have some record of who lived there at that time.
Thank you for trying so hard to help me.
