Look up - Birth - Thomas Dean - Antrim or Belfast 1861 or 1862
« on: Monday 14 March 11 12:11 GMT (UK) »
I would be extremely grateful if someone could help look up the following:

Thomas Dean  ( spelling may also be Deane it got changed back and forth over the years!)
Born: 1861 or 1862 somewhere in Co Antrim, or possibly Belfast
Father: William
Father Occupation : Engineer ( Railway)
Mother name: not known.

Notes: I already looked up family search to find a Thomas Christopher Dean born 1864 Belfast.. However, it says his father was Thomas.  I obtained Thomas Dean's  marriage cert from 1885  and it  says his father was William.

Many thanks!

Edited on 15/3 with further info:  Thomas Dean married in Limerick and further info from marriage cert and Limerick census says born 1861 or 1862 in Co Antrim?  I have looked at family search til I am goggle eyed and still cannot find the right information. Any help appreciated!

Think your post originally said something like born 1864 or 1865?
Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificates before that date which is why you are not finding him listed on LDS site.
To find a baptismal records (if the church records exist) you need to know both the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland- or if Belfast then the street or at least area.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Whoops! I knew I forgot something!  ::)

Thomas Dean ( Deane) religion, Roman Catholic.

As for his birth place: the 1911 limerick census says born in Belfast City. The 1901 census says Co Antrim.

The same census also gives different ages. however,  the marriage cert and the 1911 census both suggest he was born in 1861 or 1862

Just had another thought when  typing this:  Thomas Dean was an Engine Fitter on the railway, as was his father William Dean ( Railway Engineer)  Are  there any searchable Northern Ireland railway employee records available ( preferably online) I would not know the railway company in Belfast or Antrim, unfortunately.

Many thanks.

I believe I am related to the Thomas Dean you have noted in your post. He would be my great grandfather.  Are you also related to this Thomas Dean? William would be my great great grandfather. I live in the USA.  If you are a relative I would love to learn more about the Dean's from Limerick. Please advise. Thanks!

Hi there 'American Relative'

I shall post some finds just in case 'Diggie' gets back to you !

This is obviously Thomas Deane in 1901

thomas deane 1901 Irish Census

and Thomas Deane in 1911

thomas deane 1911 Irish Census

Now, I could be wrong but I think there is a good chance that this William Deane is the brother of Thomas

This is William Deane in 1901 - same occupation and born in Belfast

william deane 1901 Irish Census

and this is him in 1911 - again same occupation and born in Belfast

william deane 1911 Irish Census

So, this William's parents were called William Deane and Ellen Ra(i)son

and I have found some other siblings

william deane and ellen raison children

Tara

Thanks for the information Tara.

I looked at it quickly and the census information for Thomas Dean matches what I have. Thomas is my Great Grandfather and William is my Great Great Grandfather.  I will look more in depth at all the information you have provided. I will post any additional information I find that is relevant to Thomas and William Dean. I believe I have a photo of Thomas Dean. I will look for that and post it if I can. I look forward to hearing from any relatives out there.

Hi American Relative

The same Thomas Dean I'm interested in is the same on the 1901 census that Tara looked up.

Thankyou Tara!

It would seem that the two Dean families in America  and Limerick may be linked. I will send you a PM via this Forum shortly ( bear in mind you have to have posted a few posts to receive and send PM's not sure how many). I can then update you with more info on this family.

Regards

Diggie

Hi Diggie,

[Much interested in your moniker - will PM!]

Thomas Dean was an Engine Fitter on the railway, as was his father William Dean ( Railway Engineer)  Are  there any searchable Northern Ireland railway employee records available ( preferably online) I would not know the railway company in Belfast or Antrim, unfortunately.

For my take on a brief overview of the genesis of the railway network in Norn Iron see ...

Hi Capt Jock

will reply to your PM, I just made up the name Diggie as i am digging up ancestral roots!

I was keen to read the thread you posted about Railway Records in Northern Ireland and thankyou for sharing the information and also the PRONI records.

I take it that I can ask to see the archives you mentioned  e.g the employment records for the railways, without any issues if I went up to PRONI?

potentially this throws up new research options.

thanks!
