Do you have a copy of the inscription on the Mitchell gravestone at Turriff? If not, I can send you one.

I have an enormous amount of information on this Imlah family going back to the 1680s. I am descended from John Imlay, the brother of your Alexander Imlah's grandfather, Alexander (d. 1817). The earliest actual signature we have of a direct ancestor in the 1730s uses the spelling Imlay, and that has been kept by my branch. From the late 18th century some of the family used Imlay and Imlah interchangeably. Your branch has used Imlah more or less consistently since the 1780s. Please feel free to get in touch if you think I can fill in any blanks in your researches.

Graham.

I realize that your post re Imlah/Imlay family was an old one, but I am hoping you are still online.

I am looking for a John Imlah/Imlach who would have been born c. 1731 (death records show him being 89 years old when he died in 1821) somewhere in the area of Aberdeen/Inverness. He was in Philadelphia, married to Isabella (also a Scot) but 1757 when their first known child was baptized. Hi fought for the King in the French Indian War. The names of his children were (in order of birth) Isabella, John, James, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ann, William, Sarah, Mary & Charlotte. I have been using the Scottish naming rules - clutching at straws to find a possible birth in Scotland.  One such birth has been found in Glassgreen, but it does not ring true to me.
My John was also a farmer and disinherited two sons who did not follow this life.(No idea of the actual reason, however) but it is possible that he came from a farming family.

Do you have any Imlahs (or variants) in your files who could possibly fit my John?

Hi, Graham
I have been trying to find a link to my Imlah family for years, and attempted to contact you once before. I am hoping that we might be able to help each other here.

My John Imlah (Umlach Imlach Umlah) left Scotland and was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1757. He died in Canada (Nova Scotia) in 1821, age 89 years which makes his birth c. 1832 if his age is correct.

His wife was Isabella. He was a "Highland Scot". I have examined every John Imlah/Imlah etc I can find for a birth baptism c. 1732 to no avail. He was very family orientated and so I think he may have adhered to the Scottish naming practice. His first daughter was Isabella and his first son was John. Obviously he may have named these children after himself and his wife.
Anyway - i am hoping that you may know of a John Imlah/Imlay who could fit into this timeline. It is been suggested that he was the John Imlah baptized at Glassgreen, but that baptism was 10 years earlier that it should be.
