TOOGOOD Family- Richmond YKS and Baltimore MD

My Grandfather's cousin Frances TOOGOOD (nee DELANEY) married a Denis TOOGOOD in Richmond YKS England in 1940 and they had three children- ^(*).

Frances died in Baltimore in 1999 and Denis in 1973. I can't find a record of when they emigrated there, but I'm assuming that their children went with them.

Is there an easy way to find out whether the daughters married there and whether they still live in the area?

The USA does not have a BMD Index, what is available varies State to State and County to County so it will be difficult to trace marriages for the females.

Perhaps if you could locate any Obituaries for Dennis or Frances then that could help you with the married names (presuming that they did both marry)

There are some RAOGK Volunteers in Baltimore but can't see one that does not require reimbursement.  The link is below if you wish to have a look.

The Baltimore Public Library has a "Ask A Question" link - maybe they could help if there were any Obituary Notices.

If you have a library near you - they may have access to Ancestry Library Edition - which has the newspaper - Baltimore Sun 1837 - 1985.  Not sure if that could help you. 

Frances did appear on a UK Incoming Passenger List from Singapore to Southampton 26th May 1948 on the Dunera with the 3 children. They seem to have joined the ship in Columbo - Country of last residence was Ceylon. They were going to No 1 Dept Regt. Royal Signals Airfield. Rockington. Yorkshire.

Just noticed that the SSDI Record shows it was issued in Maryland but mentions  -  last residence - US Consulate (Canada) Perhaps it could indicate that one of the children could live in Canada

I found an obituary for Denis on Google News Archives (http://news.google.com/archivesearch) in the Baltimore Sun from 15 Aug. 1973.  You can try searching "Dennis Toogood" and Frances.  It's pay-per-view, but I can see parts of the text through searching.  It says he and his wife, the former Frances E. Delaney, immigrated to the US from Canada in 1966 and were naturalized in February, 1973.  He was survived by his two daughters, one son, and 8 grandchildren.  It has the daughters' married names, which I can send you by private message if you'd like.

Hello Daz,

Pleased to have helped in a small way. Just to give you an insight & explain that there are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs which will make your search for the female marriages difficult if they were married in Canada.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  The last available Canadian Census was 1911 apart from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta which was 1916.  As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 80 years ago and deaths 70 years ago.  There are also restrictions on who can apply for a birth certificate. Death certificates can be released if the death occurred more than 20 years ago and the deceased would be 75 years of age or more.

So you can see from that how tight the privacy laws make it in trying to get information.
