Is anyone researching MILLER shipbuilders on the Clyde, with branch at St Monans Fife, and especially John MILLER coming to Ramsgate in Kent England when harbour wall being built in 1740s.  He worked as a stonemason on arrival, then became a builder of small boats alongside the harbour through 18th and 19th centuries.   Some of this family went to Chatham.  Old books say John was son of John senior, officer in a Scottish regiment, and connected with the ones on the Clyde.    The ones here in Kent have been well researched; it is the roots in Scotland now sought.

Hello.  I'm looking at this family as my brother in law is descendant from John Miller m Catherine Bridgeford 06 Feb 1802 St. Monance, Fife.  I believe John was b. 1773 in St Monance. The info in your message opens up a whole new group of possibilities.

What makes you think that Miller's the St. Monans boatbuilders was connected with this family? The St. Monans firm was set up in the East Neuk of Fife in 1747 and was in St. Monans by 1779. It was sold to a Liverpool-based firm in 1976 and ceased trading in 1992. I think you are conflating two different families.

I have no idea if the Miller's I am following are connected to the ones in the original post.

I do know that the family I am following where ship builders in St Monace (St Monis).

You and I have been in touch before and I fully accept that your brother-in-law is descended from the St. Monans Millers, no question about that.

An Alexander Miller was employed in building the harbour at Wick!

Miller is a common name in Caithness, and I would think he was a local boy. The St. Monans firm were boat and latterly also yacht-builders.
