Just to let you know there is no record of
divorce in Victoria in the names of Manton, Wells, or Herbert.

Hi Karen

I'm descended from Elijah & Matilda Manton.

Just to add to the mystery, their first son Elijah Herbert Manton is buried in the Manton family grave in Leceistershire. They must have come to Australia twice but I haven't found them on the shipping lists.

Also, Elijah was arrested for desertion in Forbes NSW in the early 1860's.

Cheers

Now im totally confused...lol...Wonder why they have Wells as the middle name as we are ancestors of George so dont know now if we are actually Manton & not Wells... Im sure from Philip onwards she had them with Henry Wells, as he is listed as father on death certs, but was maybe still married to Manton so listed Manton as father??
Hi Karen, I have just joined RootsChat and was thriled to find this discussion on Matilda Herbert, Henry Wells & Elijah Manton. All this info is very helpful. My husband is also a descendant of George so we may have a family connection. Are you a member of Ancestry as I would like to make contact with you in an appropriate way? If not what is the best way for Rootschat members to contact offline or is that not recommended? Thanks again for all your help

Hi Valerie,
Welcome to RootsChat.  :D

There is a personal message system here.  All you need to do is make 3 posts - 1 down, 2 to go (they don't have to be significant) and then you can "PM" anyone.  You just click on the scroll under their information on the left hand side.  A new screen will open, very similar to when you send email.

Cheers,
Alison   ;D
