Eliza Jenkins(born 1865) son John McNeill Jenkins (born 1903)
« on: Friday 11 March 11 21:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Trying to trace family of my great-grandmother Elizabeth (Eliza) Jenkins born I believe in Belfast in 1865. No father was named on my grandfather John's birth certificate so it is quite difficult to discover anything relating to Elizabeth. What I do know is that she worked as a maid in Larne around 1902/1903, and returned to Belfast before 1911. I found them both on the 1911 census but cannot find Elizabeth on the 1901 census, while my grandfather was born in 1903 in Larne.  I believe my grandfathers middle name of McNeill is his fathers surname, but this is only a guess.  Her parents maybe William Jenkins and mother Elizabeth (nee Gault). There is a possibility that she may have been married to someone else before going to Larne.

Any information would be very much appreciated!!

Welcome to Rootschat.

Is this Eliza Jenkins and son in 1911 census? (listed as single)

Yes, My grandad John grew up around the Sandy Row area so I do believe this is him and his mother. It says county down which is a bit confusing, but I am starting to believe she may have been married and then divorced even though it says single. This is an avenue that I would like to explore.

Any marriage records available anywhere, say 1884 to 1903 in the antrim or down areas?

Thanks

Terry

It was the head of the household who gave the census information so the details could easily be incorrect.

Civil registration index is online- you'll need to search for bride and groom separately then cross-reference results for matching details-

Hi, Thanks for the link. I was correct, Elizabeth Jenkins/Junkin was married to an Andrew M'Kay in 1877, he may have died in 1885 if this is the same person. Hard to believe this as she would only have been 12. He may have links to Derry/Londonderry, and there is an Elizabeth M'Kay on the 1901 census working as a servant/maid. Like I said she worked as a servant/maid in around 1902/03 in Larne.

Could she have got married at 12? Her mother Elizabeth Gault I believe died in 1877, maybe this had something to do with it. Can you confirm any of this? I will keep going and will find an answer!!!

Hi,
This may be a bit of a blow. The McKay/Junkin marriage took place in Ballymena 1st Presbyterian Church followed by a marriage in Ballymena Registrars Office on 26 Oct 1877. In this case the bride's father was given as JAMES.

Hi, Elizabeth Jenkins/Junkin mother was named Elizabeth Gault and I remember when I was quite small that my parents went to a church in Glynn near Larne to visit graves there. I can only presume that it was the Gault family that they where visiting. That family is of a William and Elizabeth Gault and I have found references on the internet in regards to this family line, but no reference to an Elizabeth. The dates fit in as there is a sons James (c1838), Hugh (c1830), Patrick (c1836), and daughter Agnes (c1834). Is it possible these are in fact cousins and not brothers & sister of my Elizabeth Gault. I found reference to a William Gault but with no date of birth in the Balymoney area as well as an Elizabeth Gault and it could be that these two family lines trace back to brothers Hugh & John Gault c1750-1755 in the Larne area.

Is it possible to get more info on Elizabeth Gault born c1840 in Antrim or her father William?

Best Regards, Terry
