Robert Ebdons/Ebdens from Southwark

Hello lovely people...

I haven't been around here for some time, but am badly in need of inspiration.


Jeffrey Grimwood Drain 1816-75 married Elizabeth Hannah Ebdon 1819-1901 in May 1839 Newington St Mary

Her parents were Robert Ebdon and Fanny according to her Baptism 1820 and marriage 1839.
Robert's age is  a matter of fancy 1841-50, 1851-78, 1861-80, to his death aged 95 in Mar Qtr 1871.
Equally his POB  is variously 1841-Surrey, 1851-Tiverton, Devon, and 1861-Exeter, Devon.
He was however, a carpenter.

Does anyone know anything about him and who Fanny was? She inconveniently died in 1848.

To further complicate things Jeffrey Drain 1816-75's son, Jeffrey Grimwood 1844-87 married Caroline Ebdon nee Wade in 1865. She  the widow of Robert Henry Ebdon who she married in 1858.
His father was also Robert Henry Ebdon another Carpenter.

Robert Ebdon was buried 01 Feb 1871 St Mary Newington, he was residing at 4 Holcomb Buildings and his age at death was recorded as 95, which makes his birth date around 1775/76. Though like the census returns, his year of birth could be anything. He was married to Fanny, though he real name was most probably Frances. She died in 1848 and was buried on 05 Dec St Olave in Southwark.  She was living at 1 Vinegar Yard (by the present day site of London Bridge Station), which was the same address as Robert who was registered as a widower in the 1851 census. I can't find their marriage details or their birth details, though Robert was born in Devon, Tiverton or Exeter depending on which census you read. Neither Tiverton or Exeter are close to each other so take your pick as to where exactly.

Death registration for Frances Ebdon has her age at 65.

There's a Robert Ebdon baptised 23 Jan 1774 Stockland Devon parents John & Elizabeth. 

What about Ann who was 4 in 1841?  Don't suppose her birth squeezes onto the registrations 

The hint is to an Ann Howard Ebdon so maybe Howard is a clue.

No that can't be a daughter if Frances was 65 in 1848.
