Robert Monk b.1780 - St Giles
« on: Thursday 10 March 11 22:11 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Robert Monk, whose British Army records state that he was born in St Giles in the parish of St Giles, Oxford in 1780.
He was a breeches maker.
I have not been able to find any birth or marriage records online (yet!).
He joined the Army in 1805, 30th Regiment of Foot and was posted to India in 1806, where he remained until his death in 1853.
He married Mary and had 9 children in India.
That's all I know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am in Australia, so it's a bit difficult for me to visit anyone to view records other than online.

Hi Celeste,
Unfortunately I can't help with the possible baptism of Robert MONK in St Giles.

Are Robert's parents names mentioned in his Army records?
If they are, share them here and I can look up the OFHS Oxfordshire Marriage Index for you.

Is there a genealogy society/family reseach centre near you? They usually have many overseas resources to help with your research.

Thank you for the offer but unfortunately Robert's parents are not mentioned in his army records.

There is a genealogy research centre near me but the lady is undergoing chemotherapy and has not been available for the last year. I have been awaiting results from her helper since September of last year.
Additionally, i hired an English researcher online through a website last year, who then proceeded to charge my credit card (unauthorized) for a further $300 over a period of 3 months with no work done. Luckily, my bank refunded the money in full.

Hi again Celeste.
That's a shame. thought they might be mentioned as next of kin before his marriage.
There are a few MONK marriages in Oxfordshire in the right time frame, but none listed at St. Giles.

Sorry to hear about your other research experiences, thank goodness the bank saw fit to refund your money.

I hope someone with access to St Giles parish records comes along to help.
