Where is Chalkhill in Cromarty parish?
« on: Thursday 10 March 11 03:34 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Chalkhill that was given in an 1871 census for the address in Cromarty Parish for the address where my GT Grandfather was boarding.   The census pages before and after this record give Chalkhill, Glenurquhart House and Whitebog. On the National Archive Maps I cannot find anything called Chalkhill in that area, .....but there is Callachy Hills between Glenurquhart and Whitebog.

Could Chalkhill and Callachy Hills be one and the same?  Would there be anyone from that area that would know OR I am wondering too what the word Callachy means??

Thanks again!  I really appreciate this forum when researching from Canada

On the 1841 census Chalkhill seems to be in the vicinity of Allerton and Davidston.  One of those present was a blacksmith and I see that there's a "Smithy", a group of buildings, marked on an old OS map, just to the SE of Davidston. Could be a possibility?  I'll pop in to the Inverness archive centre and see what I can find if you want?

ThankYou Imber ! I would sure appreciate that !

Davidston and Allerton are listed in the free header page I get from Scotlands People for the 1871 census in that parish.    I did not think of checking an earlier census as my guy was only there transistory to Elginshire.

Chalkhill is a township that has long gone, but it was on the County Road outside Cromarty, beyond Allerton Farm and the Township of Davidston, both of which are still locations where people live.

This aerial view shows the view back to Cromarty - Callachy is in the Foreground to the left the TV mast. Davidston and Allerton are back towards Cromarty.

Hi Calum!

Your friendly (?) former Facilities Manager here! Nice photo indeed. I was thinking of visiting the archives tomorrow.  Chalkhill as a name doesn't sound too local.  Do you think the Middletons brought it with them? A long shot might be a reference to a local limestone outcrop, or am I getting carried away.  Hope all's well with you and your family, although the old place seems to be facing quite a few challenges these days.

Hi again

I had an enjoyable session at the Archives yet was unable to find anything on Chalkhill save reference to an early estate map on which it appears and subsequently Tearlach pointed me to the following article relating to this map:

http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/PSAS_2002/pdf/vol_116/116_455_472.pdf

Chalkhill seems to appear in the article as both Cauldhill and Caulkhill although the latter is the spelling on the original plan.  Caulk was the Scots word for chalk.  While this is all quite fascinating it's a lot earlier than the period you were researching.  Still, it takes things a little further and I'll keep an eye open for any further references.

Thank You very much Imber !  and am glad you had a good time at the Archives, I wish I could have joined you !!  This all helps , and I had at one point tried to find out what Chalkhill would mean in Gaelic but was unsuccessful.

Sincerely Heather
