Gilwern isaf Upper Llandwrog???
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 18:47 GMT (UK) »
On tracing my grandfather's family (Roberts of Upper Llandwrog)  I note from the 1871 census that his mother, my great great grandmother (Gwen / Winifred different census years have given different christian names but I think it's Gwen) is down as a servant at the above farm address! Living at the same address were David and Jane Owen.
Can anyone shed any light on the above address. Also  is ISAF the welsh far Farm?
any help greatly appreciated.

Hello litherland lass

The Welsh word "ISAF" means lower in English.  Conversely upper in Welsh is "UCHAF"

Here is a handy translator from G**gle

thanks Hiraeth.
Then I need to find out if Gilwernisaf is a farm.
according to the 1871 census my great grandmother was a servant at this address with the other occupants being David and Jane Owen. David listed as a farmer.
Also, not sure of its location as my great grandmother was from Rhyd Ddu in Beddgelert but when she married my great grandfather they lived in Upper Llandwrog.

If you search the names of farms for a couple of  the census pages on either side you should be able to find at least one name on an OS map or Old Map of the locality.

Hi
Rhosboeth's co-ordinates are correct. Mountaineers will be more familiar with the form SH482569 (6 figure reference). Haven't checked postcode, know LL54 7  bit is correct.
Although my family is from Porthmadog area, one of my mother's sisters married one of the sons of Gilwern Isaf, c. 1930 and lived in the area.

I wouldn't recommend it for translating prose.    But it can be useful to a non Welsh speaker for single words ;D
