Three Joseph Sandfords in Wooldale
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 09:26 GMT (UK) »
I have three Joseph Sandfords :

Joseph and Hannah with their children Samuel (b 1807) and Tedbar (b 1811) living at Wooldale, then Cartworth.

Joseph (wife unknown) with his son William (b1822) living at Wooldale.

Joseph (wife unknown) with his son Nathan (b 1824) living at Wooldale

I have been trying to determine if at least two are one and the same Joseph but there is nothing on the IGI. Wooldale is on the Kirkburton side of the river so does anyone have access to records from Kirkburton to try and resolve this.

Thank you.

I thought there could not be so many different Joseph Sandfords.

Thank you.

Thank you, Wyjan, and I apologise for the delay in response but I have been away.

It is Joseph's children which are of interest but every piece of information helps, particularly when the ages in the 1841 census were rounded down.

...back again Holmemoss. I do have an interest in the Sandford family. As I have mentioned in a previous posting (Heward)I am interested in the Mellors and the Haighs of Holmfirth/Fulstone. Amelia Haigh (1810) married into the Sandford family and this is where my first interest started. However through research it turned out that my late cousin (descendant of the Haighs)married a descendant of the Sandford family and together, quite recently his wife and I have concentrated on finding out as much of the Sandfords as we can.The information we have on Joseph is the following:-
Joseph Sandford bapt 6th Apr 1786 at Newmill married Hannah Smith possible dau of John Smith. Witnesses were Samuel Sandford ( believe to be older brother) and John Smith. They married at Kirkburton 25 Dec 1806.The only baptisms we have are :-
Samuel Sandford  25th Apr 1807  bapt at Holmfirth Wesleyan ( married my relative Amelia Haigh)
Tedbar Sandford 10th July 1811 at Holmfirth Wesleyan

I haven't managed to trace the baptisms of the other children
John 1812
Martha 1819
Mary 1820
William 1821
Nathan 1824
Smith 1828
Ann 1830

I haven't the information at hand but I think Tedbar, or his descendant another Tedbar Sandford is buried at Lydgate chapel at Newmill- janet

Hello Janet and thank you for the information.

I have several Sandfords by marriage and have been trying to tie them altogether.

I do not have a marriage for Samuel Sandford and Amelia Haigh but their son David married three of my relatives:

Mary Ellis on 1 Jul 1855 at Kirkburton. They had one child as far as I am aware; Eliza Ann born 1857/8. Eliza Ann was buried at Upperthong on 16 Jul 1872.

Mary died (buried at Upperthong on 26 Jul 1860) and David married her sister Martha in 1860. Three children of whom I am aware:

David Henry, baptised at Holy Trinity Holmfirth on 10 Mar 1861 and buried at Upperthong on 25 Jun 1861.
Sam, born 1861/2 and buried at Upperthong on 29 Jul 1880.
Emily, born 1866/7 who married Dick Robinson in 1888.

Martha died (buried at Upperthong on 21 Jan 1867) and David then married Sophia Cartwright in 1868. Five children of whom I am aware:

James Herbert, born 1871, who married Annie Eliza Brook in 1897.
Emmaline, born 1876 and died 1885.
Edith Annie, born 1878 and died 1898.
Hannah, born 1879/80 who married Harry Gibson in 1902.
Firth, born 1881 and died 1885.

Thanks for the information.
David Sandford was named after Amelia Haigh Sandford's father David Haigh. I have the marriage details of Samuel and Amelia somewhere so I will find it out. Half of their family settled in the States and the other half stopped in England. Samuel Sandford settled in America but came back to Cartworth just prior to the 1871 census. His wife Amelia and his daughter Sarah travelled to the US in July of 1871 but sadly Amelia died in Kansas shortly after arriving. Her present descendants are not sure where she is buried.
