Does anyone have any information on Thomas, Born Lanarkshire, worked in and around Bury, Lancashire from early 1880's as Farmer / Auctioneer. He lived at Top Of Heap and Unsworth. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Elizabeth & welcome to RootsChat

To avoid duplication of effort can you tell us what you already know and what you would like to find out?

It's very disheartening to work on something, then be told by the poster 'Oh I already knew all that!'   :)

Hello,
Re Thomas Scott, I know he was born and married in Lanark. I am trying to find out more about his time as an Auctioneer in the Bury area.Did he work with other members of family and who started "Scott Real Estate" that is still going in the Manchester area.  He returned to Scotland with his family in the early 1900's, don't know what year.

Hi Elizabeth

Can't spot him easily in the censuses - do you have the references (Year/Piece/Folio/Page)?

Alternatively

When was he born
who did he marry
names and DOB of children

Have you tried contacting Scott Real Estate?  If it's still a family run firm they may have old records that would help you

On the 1901 census, the same family can be seen at reference RG13/3832/175/8, living at Royle Farm, Middleton. They have three more children - Samuel 8, James 6 and Lizzie 4, all born at Heywood. GF

I think this is Thomas, with his parents and siblings, on an 1881 Scotland Census transcription

Westside, Lanark, Lanarkshire

William Scott Head 54 Farmer* b Lanarkshire Strathaven
Agnes do Wife 52 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Thomas do Son 26 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Mary Ann do Daur 21 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Robert do Son 19 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Agnes M do Daur 17 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Garrie do Son 14 b Lanarkshire Lesmahagow
Hugh do Son 12 b Lanarkshire Lanark
John do Son 10 b Lanarkshire Lanark
Margaret do Grand Daur 4 b Lanarkshire Lanark

*Farmer 160 Acres, 150 Arable, Employing 4 Man & 2 Woman

Thomas' parents (and some siblings) are also living in the Bury area in 1891 and 1901. GF

I think Thomas Scott married Elizabeth Nelson Pringle in 1881 at Carluke, Lanarkshire.

I think this link shows the baptism of their first child, William. GF
