Mary Ann archer Marriage St George Hanover Square
« on: Monday 07 March 11 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help please. I have extracted from Ancestry the following Pallott Marriage Index information regarding the marriage of Mary Ann Archer:-

ARCHER Mary Ann.w. = John Turney (of St albans) b.  Lic.

P R St Geo H Sq 1815

Does the the w mean she was a widow and if so is the surname her maiden name or her previous married name.

Does the b after his name mean bachelor ?

Would there be any further information regardingthe marriage in the parish register of St George Hanover Square.

Many Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter

If you have access to Ancestry you can find the marriage in the London England Marriage and banns 1754 -1921 records. You can then see the actual entry in the book.

Hi

Pallots when they produced the index would have looked at the actual marriage register (held now at Westminster Archives). Ancestry hold no registers held at Westminster Archives only registers deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives and the Guildhall Library. What the LMA hold are the Bishop Transcripts for some Westminster parishes like St George Hanover Square. Bishops Transcripts were the yearly copy of the registers made around Easter and sent to the Bishop. They were not always done, do not always survive and like any copies are not without their errors - it was a time consuming task for a parish as large as St George Hanover Square to copy all their registers for the year so it is likely errors will have crept in.
Pallots index is usually accurate.
If she was a widow she will have married in her married name not her original maiden name.

Valda
