Cambusnethan churchyard headstone pictures

Taking a leaf out of Sancti's book, I am posting a list of headstones from Cambusnethan churchyard at Greenhead Road (not the ancient burial ground at Kirkhill).
I have photographs of each stone, if anyone requires a copy please contact me by PM and include your email address.
The names in upper-case are the principal surnames on the stone, (Usually Husband + Wife) the names in lower-case are place names.
Where there is only one surname I have tried to add at least one Christian name in brackets.
There are a few from the old private walled burial ground adjacent to the churchyard, this dates from 1861 +.

This is a very nice offer.  I'm not ready to trouble you for a photo, but I have been searching for the burial place of Margaret/Maggie STEELE (ms BARCLAY) THOMSON, born 1851 in Hamilton and married 1877 in Cambusnethan.

She would not be buried with her husband or children since they all emigrated from Scotland shortly after her death (age 52) on 23 January 1904 at Calderwood Castle (husband John Thomson was head gardener there).  She is not buried with her husband's people in the Dalserf churchyard.

Perhaps she was buried with some of her Cambusnethan people.  Parents were Margaret Steele and William Barclay.  Siblings were Samuel, Mary, William, John and Matthew Barclay.

Can you tell me if any of your listed Barclay, Steele or Thomson families have a stray Margaret/Maggie on the headstone?

Hi Mary Ellen,

There is a gap in the Cambusnethan burial records between 1901 - 1906, so it isn't possible to search for your ancestor. Nothing shows up on the monumental inscriptions either.  There is no sign of her parents or any of her siblings, so perhaps they were interred someplace else. Have you tried East Kilbride?

Thank you, Lodger.  Too bad about the gap in the records.  I've tried everything I can but unfortunately the MI booklets are mainly pre-1855 and South Lanarkshire Council is not responding.  I believe I also set Sancti on her trail in case he runs across her.

  It's an odd situation with her dying at Calderwood Castle.  Chris Ladds advises that there were no burials there.  I am assuming that with a position as head gardener at the castle and four grown and married daughters that there would have been money for a headstone somewhere.  I don't suppose they cremated in those days, did they?  If they did, they could have brought poor Margaret's ashes with them to America.

Hi Mary, This is Chris Ladds, the historian you have corresponded with recently.

I found this whilst googling.


I am very sure they were not buried at Calderwood Castle, but I do have some inclines as to where to look. Calderwood Castle was very close to High Blantyre, but still fell within Kilbryde Parish. Technically they would be buried in the same Parish they worship. If it was not East Kilbride Old Parish Church Graveyard, then it would be the newer graveyard called East Kilbride Cemetary which is near Markethill Road on the north side of East Kilbride. Alternatively they may be buried in High Blantyre as the church was much nearer, so High Blantyre Parish Church, or other cemetaries in High Blantyre would be your best bet.

Otherwise they may have been buried where they originated from, although this is REALLY unlikely. I also doubt they were cremated. It was not the East Kilbride thing to do, or the Glasgow thing to do for that matter. Even a journey with a coffin to Glasgow from East Kilbride would have been very unusual, even for respected servants.

I have scrutinized all known maps of the old estate for a few years now, and even surveyed the entire area for my own maps, I can assure you that if there is a burial ground on Calderwood Estate (other than the Maxwell's mausoleum), then it would have been top secret.   Being no need for this measure it's safe to say they are not buried anywhere in Calderwood or St Leonards.

Having said that, it was not unusual for people to be buried in rural situations, close to a dwelling/farm, especially if the area was of great beauty and wild to begin with. This was certainly the case for where they worked. I doubt this is what happened though.

It's certainly a mystery.

Hello again, Chris, and many thanks for the additional guidance.  I have absolute trust in your assertion that she is not buried at Calderwood (at least not officially).

I will attempt to search in the other directions you suggested, but am a little stymied because South Lanarkshire Council is not responding to a previous request and I doubt I'll find anything much for 1904 in the MI booklets.

 I do have the booklet for High Blantyre Auld Kirk and Kirkyard (nothing) and will see what else is available to purchase on line.  And then I will nag the Council again.

By the way (a little off-topic), I have traced John Thomson's sons by his second marriage to their deaths in the 1980's in San Francisco, California.  1932 records there indicate they were a butcher and a fireman.  What a shame those genes went to waste!  Am trying to find their descendants and will surely let you know if I do, especially if they have anything related to John Thomson's time at Calderwood Castle.
