Advice or Assistance re family search McGee
« on: Monday 07 March 11 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Wondering whether anyone could give me advice or info on where I could find more details on the McGee family prior to 1841 census.

Here are the details I have  -

1841 census - John McGee (55) & wife Hannah (40) shown living in Derby with children Thomas (10), Edward (8), Anne (15) * Catherine (6)
John, Hannah, Thomas, Edward & Anne all born Ireland
Catherine is shown as being born in Derby so assume the family probably came to England just prior to birth.

There is also an older daughter Mary(18) also born in Ireland married to Patrick McLaughlin (25) shown living next door.
On the same road there is another McLaughlin family too - Michael, wife Mary & children Mary, Catherine & Eliza

1851 census - John is shown as widowed and now living with Anne, Thomas & Catherine
Also at the address is also shown a  cousin of John also called John being born America along with wife Maria who was born Ireland.
Again on the same road is a McLaughlin family  James, wife Jane, children Patrick, John, James & Elenor.

Rumour has it the McGee familt & McLaughlin family came from County Galway but am unable to narrow it further.
Would be great to find details of Mary Mcgee's marriage to Patrick McLaughlin or any birth details of the children.

Since the births of your McGee family are well before the start of full civil registration in Ireland (1864) so you would need to check for parish records to find details for them. To start this you first need to know the family religion and where they lived at the time, i.e. which parish town or townland, so you can check what records (if any) are available.

....

what year was Catherine born ?

If it was after the start of civil registration in England then a birth cert for her, might be a useful first step, as it would give her mother's maiden surname. This might be useful evidence to assist you confirm, or rule, any McGee marriages you may find in parish records.

Have you tried searching for the family (especially the children born in Ireland) in the later census returns to see if they ever gave a more detailed place of birth ?

p.s. did they have a children after Catherine ?
