Thank you both for your replies. Its really heartening to get help after so long!
You will note my post was in 2005 so I have moved on a bit since then and possibly away from Arboe! I found Killindrragh in Donegal but pinpointing it to Glenties is a great help - many thanks.
As for Mary White I now think she was Martha or Mary Martha as she is buried in Carrickmore as Martha Ellison, wife of George Ellison of Carrickmore - of that much I am certain! The problem is that both she, George Ellison and my grandmother Ellen, state that they were born in Co.Donegal on the census returns although no record of their birth can be found. Again the census places their birth at c. 1850 - earlier than I thought. But word of mouth from the older members of the family emphatically states that Ellen came from 'somewhere up near Omagh'!!!!! Which is why I have been looking at White families of Co.Tyrone although it doesn't look as though there is a connection to yours, Ciara.
The Killindarragh connection is that Ellen was given a Bible inscribed 'To Ellen White from Mrs. Stewart of Killindarragh' This family of Stewart was connected to Brownhall, Ballintra where Ellen worked as a maid before marrying my grandfather. Possibly she worked for Mrs. Stewart before moving to Brownhall.
I suppose its looking more and more like I should be looking at the Glenties area although the family history centre in Ramelton did a search for me and failed to find a Ellen White daughter of George White anywhere.
One other thing puzzles me - Ellen had 5 sons and not a George among them. Her second son was William - could her father have been William George knoen as George??
Who knows - but if you are out there berhaps you could get in touch!!!
Once again many thanks.
Regards,
Carol
