Newcastle St. John's
« on: Monday 07 March 11 14:50 GMT (UK) »
Are there birth records, as distinct from christening records?
If anyone has access to the birth records of Newcastle St. Johns, I would appreciate a look-up for the birth of Mark Joseph MAKEPEACE, born in or about 1773.
Although he was married at Christ Church, North Shields and all his children were christened there, I have some evidence that he may have been born in St. John's parish and his children were possibly b. in Newcastle.  His wife was from All Saints, Newcastle.
I think I have exhausted all avenues available to me and I need his place of birth to help me trace who his parents were.

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Unfortunately the answer is no that there aren't birth records in those days.  If you are lucky the vicar might have made a note against the baptism to say born x or age y but it was not standard practice.  If there was any question of claiming parish relief then there may be details in those records which might help you.
Newcastle St John is covered by the IGI so any baptism should be on www.familysearch.org and you can get the film of the register to search at your nearest LDS centre to see if there are any extra snippets.
As his children will probably have survived to census time you can confirm where they were born that way.

Newcastle St. John's is available on the Bishop's transcripts as early as 1748.

Can't see his birth, but a couple of bits of info that may help.

Looking at his childrens baptisms on the Bishops Transcripts at Christ Church, he was an Upholsterer.  This will probably be his death notice in the Newcastle Courant, 31 Jan 1829 :

Mr Mark Makepeace, of North Shields, upholsterer, aged 51. He was found dead on the morning of the 24th inst., near the Monk-House-Farm, on the road from Whitley to North Shields, having perished from the inclemency of the weather.

That gives a birth year of around 1778.

Two of the childrens baptisms have him as a native of Minorca. One as native of St. John. As well as his children baptized at Christ Church, there is an extracted baptism on the IGI of :
6 Sep 1801, Manchester Cathedral Lancashire, Ann Makepeace, daughter of Mark Joseph Makepeace and Jane.
His wife was Jane Robson on the Christ Church baptisms, so may be worth further investigation.

Thank you all for your replies.  I do have records of the transcripts for all Mark Joseph Makepeace's children which gives their birth dates as well as their christening dates but not where they were born. Although some census' have them as being b. in North Shields (where they were christened), some have Newcastle.  I also have records of his wife's christening which was at All Saints Newcastle and, as MJM is listed as 'native of St. John's Newcastle' in one of his children's christening records, I tend to assume all the family were b. in Newcastle. (ignoring the Minorca reference, as I think it would be a waste of time pursuing that route, even though there is a possibility he was born there).  This one, I think, will be delegated to my 'brick wall' file.

Thank you Michael.  I have gone this route and came to a dead end.  Minorca, I believe, was just a street in Sunderland, not an area. Whatever,
I have now decided to relegate MJM to my 'brick wall' file.
Thanks to WolfieSmith and Janis for the information re Mark Joseph's death.  I think this must be him as, in all my research, I have not found another Mark Joseph Makepeace around this time in Nlorthumberland/Durham.  His parents will remain a mystery.
