Rodgers - Loughgall
« on: Monday 07 March 11 14:16 GMT (UK) »
My Gt/Gt/Gt grandfather James Rodgers claims on his Army Service record to have been born 2nd April 1796 in Loughgall.

When he retired from the Army as Paymaster in the 26th Regiment of Foot he returned to Loughgall and was living at Eden Cottage. This is the address to which his 'pension' was paid according to other papers I have.

Have a link to newspaper that shows Jame's son Capt John Rodgers visited his dad in Loughgall.

What I am trying to find is any proof that he was indeed born where/when he claimed. The spelling of last name may have changed as he joined Army from Armagh Militia but the only James I can find is Rogers and not Rodgers.

Any help would be appreciated as I am now at the 'brick wall' stage.

Rogers & Rodgers would be completely interchangeable. The concept of a correct spelling is very much a 20th century preoccupation. They changed all the time in the 18th & 19th centuries, depending on who was recording the information. If all the other information matches correctly and the only difference is an extra D you can probably assume it's the same person.
