Help needed with WW1 Medal Rolls Cards
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 14:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody,

I wondered if somebody would be able to help me? I have found 3 medal rolls cards for ancestors, however, I don't know how to decipher them. I would like to know where they served and read about which division they were in and where they were posted for battle (if at all).

George Henry Blench:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=1492418&queryType=1&resultcount=8
(R.G.A, Rank 138969, 2nd Lte, on R&F Roll RGA/179B/Y903 Comm: 25/11/1917)

Ernest Blench:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=1492416&queryType=1&resultcount=1
(York Regiment, Private, 30777, Roll 0/10/101A Page 27)

Herbert Blench:

I know he had an MC and served in France (not sure where)

Many thanks if anybody can point me in the right direction

You are one of the Lucky People....Ernest Blenchs full service records survive on ancestry 41 pages...he was from Stockton
I think he spent most of his service in India he was at Sialkot in the Punjab at one period. He was entitled to only the British War Medal which signifies only india service.
Employed as a clerk in the 1st Garrison Batt of yorkshire Regiment.

The Officers Files are also likely to be still around although they will not be online but at Kew....Someone with better officers file knowledge should along to point you in right direction. :)

Herbert C was commissioned from Ranks and as you say awarded a MC his citation may be online.
a lot of the stuff in the remarks column is appertaining to issue and reciept of medals through the 1920s there is also an address on the rear  24 buchanan street stockton on tees
Commisioned into Royal Garrison Artillery in 1917.(3/6)
Cant find his MC citation however he resigned commission 1st April 1920 as Lieutenant he had been acting Captain

Had a quick look at his record there is reference to Sailkot on it also the fact he was only entitled to British War Medal and not Victory as well bodes well for an India posting.
Sailed home from Bombay Nov 1919

The National Archives holds a record for Blench Lieut. G.H. reference: WO 374/7147

You will either have to go to Kew, or get someone else to do so, or ask the NA to copy it for you [not recommended - they tend to be expensive] see here:

Found it :)

Also mentions he was 5'4", had suspect dental hygeine and bad cases of boils and pemphigus whilst in Sailkot. As least he was of good character though!
