Lookup? Yarwoods to USA 1872-1880?
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 15:51 BST (UK) »
Robert Bayes Yarwood b 1831 Southwark, is evident in the US 1880 Census in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Present with him are sons, Samuel Kay Yarwood b 1852 and Frederick James b 1867  and Robert Harrison Yarwood also 1867 and daughter Susannah Kay b 1857 as well as his second wife Mary Ellen, neé Harrison b 1840.

The 1871 Census of Barton St Peter, Lincolnshire, England shows mary Ellen with Susan(nah) and Fred but no Sam or father Robert.

Has father and son already left to prepare the ground in USA?

I can find no record of any of the family travelling to New York but a tantalkising suggestion that Susannah may appear on the International & Passenger Records Including Irish & British Immigrants to America, 1873 - 1879 Vol. 3

Does any kind soul have access to these and if so can they please do me a lookup?

The saddest thing is that the family seems to have lost Sam and Susan who we have been unable to find later in US ecords.

Thanks in anticipation.

Colin

Hi Colin
On the US 1870 census, there is a Robert YARWOOD, age 40, Hatter, born England, living in NY, Kings, Brooklyn, Ward 3. It does not indicate whether he was married/single, but he is living alone.

I found the following passengers that could well be your family:

YARWOOD
Robert, Age 4,
Frederick, Age 4
Samuel R, age 21
Susan, age 16
Mary, age 30

Country of Origin: England
Last Residence: Unknown
Date of Arrival: June 9, 1873
Final Destination: United States
Port of Embarkation: Liverpool and Queenstown
Ship Name: Oceanic
Ship Manifest Number: 00032948
Purpose of Travel: Staying in the USA
Mode of Travel: Steerage.

The 1900 US census finds a Robert H. Yarwood in NY, of the correct age, stating his arrival date in the USA as 1874.

Hoping that this is of assistance in your search,
Regards,
Valerie

That is just brilliant. Thanks

Does the 1890 census give any more info? Are they all there? Is there an address?

Now all I have to do is find out what happened to Samuel and Susannah who, so far as the living family are aware disappeared!

Grateful. Again Thanks

Hi Colin
Unfortunately, the 1890 census was mostly destroyed by fire, and very little remains.

1900 Census, New York, Brooklyn, ED 110, Sheet 2A

YARWOOD
Robert, head, Male, White, born May 1867, (33) England, parents born England.  To USA 1874 (26 years) is naturalized.
Married for 7 years.

Ida, wife, female, white, born Sept 1868 (32) New York, parents born New York.  Married for 7 years.  mother to 3 children, all living.

Mildred, daughter, born June 1894, New York
Harold, son, born Dec 1895, New York
Gladys, dau, born Jan 1899, New York

Hary (?)A, brother, born April 1881, New York.

CONLON, Henry (?) Uncle, born Aug 1842, New York, single.

Robert worked in a dry good store, and brother Hary was a clerk in dry goods also.

Home address was: #22, 57th Street.

No sign of Samuel on the 1900 index, sorry.
It is quite possible that Susan/nah has married.

Hope this is helpful to your research,
Valerie

Jennifer

All I can say is thank you Thats briliant. I knew R H Y died in Niagara and Fred is his younger brother. R B Y died 1899 so thats why he disappears.

Well found on Samuel. I thought he had may be left USA. I'll need to search for Susan/nahs marriage now but thank you for filling loads of gaps.
