Marraige Lookup Leicester - Blakesley (or Blaksley) 1883
« on: Friday 04 March 11 22:35 GMT (UK) »
Hope someone (Mike?) could help me with another little puzzle. My great grandfather Joseph Blakesley (often transcribed as Blaksley) lost my great grandmother (Emma) in June quarter 1882 when my gran was 4. In Sep quarter 1883 he married again - according to freeBMD to Sarah Ann BLAKSLEY. As this sounds a little unusual could any other sources be checked?
Thanks in anticipation
Richard

Hi Mike

Thanks again for assistance. I don't know what we'd do without you. I try to help a bit on the Dorset board (I'm getting quite good at photographing gravestones!), but we don't have anyone with your range of resources.
Starting with the easy bit - the Welford Road details are the right family - Emma (Elizabeth Storer) was Joseph's first wife - my great grandmother. Not only did my gran lose her mother when she was 4, but her father died in a mental hospital - her husband suffered long term illnesses and couldn't work, and finally she spent the last ten years of her life with one leg in a calliper after falling in Edinburgh and breaking her leg. I know I was quite young, but I never heard her complain.
Now its more difficult - both Joseph's marriages were in Leicester district (so not Belgrave!), but don't know which church. My Dad was brought up a Baptist, so might have been n/c. Before he married Emma, Joseph lived with his family in Thames Street, in 1881 Joseph & Emma were living at 13, Marston Street. I have not confirmed Emma prior to their marriage, as there is more than one candidate, but I have found one in St Margaret and one in All Saints, who are possibles.
The other marriage is interesting, and could have been Joseph's uncle - I only say that because his father was Charles (like the witness), and I have no info on other family members. Charles was born in Markfield c.1821, but I haven't found his birth. In 1841 he was living in Loughborough with a 75 year old Banyard Wallis of whom I know nothing.
If that gives more guidance, any more details would be welcome - I am still intrigued by Joseph's 2nd marriage. I have just reread my original post - I should have put more details in it - my excuse was thinking more about going to London today, than what I was doing!

Thanks again

Richard

Hi Richard,
I have just spotted your posts on here and I noticed in Mikes reply that he mentions a surname Roe. I have my 2 x Great Grandfather living with a 7 yr old Henry Roe ( transcribed as Boe on the 1841 census) H107/592/10. Why he was living with another child and not his own son I have never managed to find out. In 1847 John Pole was in prison, so I don't know what happened to Henry. I will try and find some more info on Henry .

Hi Yvonne

Thanks for that - not sure if there's a connection. I haven't tried to follow up on that piece of info from Mike yet, as I don't think Nathaniel is that close. Still hoping someone can find Joseph's 2nd marriage (to Sarah Ann) because I believe Free BMD is probably wrong on this one. I do have a book of photographs which I think came from my Gran, Ada Elizabeth Blakesley which is one reason I am trying to work it all out, in hopes of identifying some of them - or who is who in accompanying letters!

Just to put this thread to bed, as it were, Yvonne kindly found me Sarah Ann's will, with probate granted jointly to my grandfather (to whom she was step mother-in-law, if such a relationship exists) and my grandmother's sister's son - thus proving I had the correct family. She also found in the 1881 census that Sarah Ann was the daughter of Nathaniel and Martha, whose marriage Mike found, and was thus a Blaksley (or Blakesley) all along - so Free BMD is correct. This must rate as a complete success in answering my question - now I can go away and work out if Joseph and Sarah Ann were related.

There were 2 Sarah Ann Blakesleys both born 1852 so I'm unsure which one  married Joseph.I have made a detailed study of the Blakesleys. Most were non-conformist.
I would be very interested in the  burials of Blakesleys if there is a possibility. Thanks
