Newland Hull, Sculcoates
« on: Friday 04 March 11 09:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi

on the 1911 census I found found a pupil at a school called Newland Hull. in Sculcoates.
This institution is actually described as an orphanage but this lads mother was still alive.
Is there any info out there on this establishment, or could anyone help me please?

The lads name was John Dutton but he is called Jack at Newland Hull. b 1897 in Bromley, kent.
I found him on 1901 with his parents John Dutton and Laura, his mother states she came from Norway [confirmed on 1911] and his father from New South Wales, which i first took as Australia but I have no proof.

I have found his birth in Poplar 1896 and his death  in 1972 Amersham. I have sent away for his birth cert to confirm his parents names/occupation etc.
I have found a possible marriage in  J q 1895 for a John Dutton and a Laura Ingeborg Johnsen. again Sculcoates area [I wonder if Laura's surname has been anglesisded form Johannasen - but that is just a guess]

If anyone can help I would really appreciate help confirming any of this information.

Many Thanks

Hull Sailors Orphanage also known as Newlands Homes was in Cottingham Road, Hull. I used to walk past it every day on my way to school further up the road and I learned to swim there.

The site was closed as an orphanage some years ago and I believe has been sold for housing. If you Google Newlands Homes you should find a variety of sites to help your quest.

Walkerpete and Treetotal

Many thanks for your help. I will go and look if the orphanage is on the Hull archive site.
There was a navy link so perhaps it all ties in

No, I hadn't spotted her, mind you I have been searching for Bertha not Benedicta. That is brilliant thank you so much.
I can also now try and find a marriage for her under Benedicta.- found on freebmd a marriage for Bertha B Dutton for Freeman W Leach in Hull, 1947

Hi Cullen....You're welcome...Bertha was most likely to have been her middle name......every little helps..where was their Mother living in 1911...Children were often taken into orphanages when their mother had limited income and was unable to provide for her Children...Their Father would have had a seagoing occupation before he died.

Hi Carol

Mother was a housekeeper in Cambridgeshire acc to the 1911.
Do you know of any records that I could find out about their father now that I know he would have had a sea going occupation?
